Hey folks, I'm going to install wordpress mu tongiht, I've set up my vhost and wildcard dns et al... A quick question. Preferably, I'd like to install wordpress mu into a subdirectory underneath root. However, I have read on here that this is problematic. Has anyone successfully installed wordpress (going the wildcard subdomain route) into a directory underneath the root? I guess I would have to modify the htaccess?

I am using a CMS (mambo) for the index page of my site... Any suggestions? Thanks in advance! I've been lurking here for some time; this is a cool community...

I didn't have problem with installing it in a subdirectory.

Do you want to keep mambo for you main page? Like this?
    http://www.example.org/ <- mambo
    blog1.example.org/ <- blog 1

I think if you first rename the index.phpin the main directory (the only php file there=) of the wpmu distribution to wpmu-install.php, upload this file and the wp-inst directory then it should work fine if you call http://www.example.org/wpmu-install.php
maybe there's 'index.php' hard-coded in the install-file, just replace it.
