The WordPress docs indicate that you have to be a Editor or Admin to moderate comments:

But on our WordPress MU install, it appears a Author can moderate comments as well.
Is this correct?
Is there a way to change it back?

I'd like to know this, too. I've tried mixing and blending some $role lines for author in upgrade-schema.php and then creating new blogs, but none seem to allow editing published posts and at the same time NOT allowing the editing of site comments. (I teach school, and I want my students to be able to edit their own posts but not edit others' comments on their posts. If a comment needs to be deleted or changed, I'd like to be the only one to do this as the administrator.)
