I have installed wordpress mu site tamilblogs.com . Installation went thro fine. I checked with my service provider hostgator.com and they told they have enabled mod_rewrite and also setup wildcard DNS for my domain.

Now when i try to create a new blog, Message says new blog has been created at URL mugunth.tamilblogs.com but i am not able to access the mugunth.tamilblogs.com .

Please advice How to resolve this problem.

Also advice how to check if wildcard DNS for my domain is setup.

    Regards,
    Mugunth

Just a thought....did you allow time for the DNS to resolove? Sometimes it's only a matter of hours, and others, can take up to 2 days. If that isn't it, maybe someone else has an idea what it might be.

Yes, that might be the problem.

I have immediately installed wordpress after hostgator enabled vhost.
Will wait for a day and try again.

Did they also setup a ServerAlias of *.tamilblogs.com in Apache's config for you?

    Yes they have setup *.tamilblogs.com

I am not sure how to check if this wildcard DNS configuration is working correctly.

    can I check using DNSREPORT.com ?
    The following URL http://dnsreport.com/tools/dnsreport.ch?domain=mugunth.tamilblogs.com
    gives the following error.
[ERROR: The parent servers say that the domain mugunth.tamilblogs.com does not exist.]

    PING tamilblogs.com (70.86.12.194): 56 data bytes
    64 bytes from 70.86.12.194: icmp_seq=0 ttl=52 time=17.691 ms

So the wildcard DNS is working and in fact http://mugunth.tamilblogs.com/ actually loads for me so I'd say your DNS just needs to be updated, try an ipconfig /flushdns or just wait for it to propagate.

    Hi

I have the same problem. I have installed wpmu, and all seems fine with that.

If I create a new blog, a) I don't receive an email giving login details and b) the subdomain doesn't seem to work.

My DNS records have the * entry (it was done a few days ago so that should have progogated now). My server has mod-rewrite installed, and the blog that I created is listed in wpmu as being there!

The only thing I am wondering is whether the ServerAlias has been setup properly. My server is running Plesk, and it was recommended to me to create a file called vhost.conf in /home/https/$domain.com/conf and put the line in it :

    ServerAlias *.domain.com

I created this file in the path /home/httpd/vhosts/selectablog.com/conf and entered the line as above (but with selectablog.com instead of domain.com, as that is my domain)

The server has been restarted since then, but it doesn't seem to have made a difference to me trying to get to my test blog.

Has anyone got any suggestions? I would appreciate any help as I'm a little lost!!

    Thanks
    James

Actually, I have this sorted. I was correct in my assumption above, and probably should have Googled first.

The page at http://faq.sw-soft.com/article_41_894_en.html has information on restarting apache after making the changes. I guess a reboot didn't reconfigure it - had to do this manually.

Promise I'll look first next time!
