This must be the 5th time I have installed… loosing out of patience the release I am using is
    2005-09-19

1.First emailed my hosting company and they Were nice enough and changed the wildcard whatever was mentioned in forums.. they replied

“made the wild card dns entry using *. This will allow pointing of any subdomain name to the domains IP. “

    2. while installing I selected the “virtual host features said yes… now my problems :
    1. when I create any new blog in email it says http://anyuser.mydomain.net/wpmu/ created I have installed wordpress mu at http://www.mydomain.net/wpmu/ I couldn’t figure out how to install at root it was giving more error and anyways it doesn’t matter having installed under another directory as long as it works …

but when I try to login with the user name provided I keep getting error “Your session has expired. and random error like “wrong username “wrong password tried even resetting the password etc

also when I visit http://anyuser.mydomain.net/wpmu/ it gives “page cannot be found so I assume some erro with DNS ?

do I have to manual create sub domains ? for the blog created every time ? when I visit http://mydomain.net/wpmu/anyuser it shows the installation of new blog but error cant login

I know this just beta thing that’s why there many bug can understand but as.. many were successfully able to install found on forum… I am sure someone can provide little help

I am looking at installing wordpress mu so that I can install some 30-40 blog relevant to site I wish to create and they have their own sub domain (don’t mind manual sitting and making sub domain.. ) choose WP mu because didn’t wanted to install same copy of wp in each blog folder same thing 40 times thus came to know about wordpress mu which does the job of installing multiple blog from one database liked it but having problem but as came across many website powered by wp mu I am sure someone can help.. ? I have scanned the whole forums here

    3. would try my 6th installation this time would try installing without vhost lets see if it works.. will try installing at root and then see

It sounds like you don't have your ServerAlias *.yourdomain.com setup in your Apache VirtualHost, the wild card DNS is one step and the ServerAlias is the other.

I know people are ahving problems installing without vhost but my install was hiccup free pretty much when I installed using vhosts.

DNS needs time to resolve and can take up to 2 days to do so. I'm assuming from your post that this has happened? Or not?

Setting up seperate subdomains won't work. I did that when I had vhosts turned on, and it didn't work. They just aren't 'connected'. The subs MU creates are different and work through it. So it won't work with a seperate sub, unless as you say, you put wordpress on the sub itself; then it wouldn't be part of the MU blog system.

If you can get it to work with vhosts, then it would be the best way to go. Try what jaesone said about the aliases and see if that helps. Since your host allows the wildcard, using vhost should work. Avoid an reinstall unless you just can't get this one to work.

That one liner in my last post should be enough for them.

One thing you can try is pinging anyuser.yourdomain.com if that resolves then the wild card dns is working but if you can't reach http://anyuser.yourdomain.com in your browser then the ServerAlias isn't setup.

thanks a lot jaseone and MadameX

madamex could be your right ? i'll wait for someday.. because they have changed it today only and i was trying to get it working didnt realised it may take time for DNS to get resolved

Jaseone : i have emailed them to confirm if they have used the line u have mentioned serverAlias and would ask them to setup

Sometimes it's only a matter of hours, but CAN take up to 2 days. Hopefully it won't take that long and you can resume work on it.

jaseone and madameX there the reply i got from hosting support

"We cant edit the httpd.conf files as it may affect other users in the server. You can enter the domain forwarding entries in the .htaccess file at your home directory"
    <br>

thus anyidea if it can still be implimented ? or only option for me would be to move to anothe hosting... ?

A .htaccess isn't going to help you as Apache won't be aware of your vhosts.

Your host should be able to edit the Virtual Host of the httpd.conf that is used for your domain but they may choose not to do this for whatever reason and a lot of them will refuse.

Hence why I love my VPS. :)

i wasnt knowing much about httpd.conf but because of this did little research and found out that

    http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/mod/core.html#virtualhost

virtual host tag its instruction within it would only apply to one account and not all thus i failed to see the reason why..

btw which hosting service do you use ? right now i have been usign for one year total choice hosting and have been happy with it

but i dont know what to do... can u suggest any other hosting provider which allow this

I use A Small Orange and are extremely happy with them, however I have a Virtual Private Server so I am in control of my own server. I'm not sure if they would make the ServerAlias change for you or not on shared hosting though.
