http://www.blogsome.com has been quite slow these days, could it be a result of too many WP blogs? How many blogs is WPMU estimated to be able to run?

    peace

It actually depends on the amount of bandwidth being used, the amount of mysql resources being used, and the amount of other server resources (i.e. ram, hd space, processor/processes running, etc).

It could just be networking problems, also. Last night, there was a fiber cut here (some dude decided to put in a fence and ended up digging at least 4 feet down and cutting our fiber), which resulted in internet slowing to a crawl for 7 hours.

    It really depends.

How long has it been like this?

for a few days, it seems fine now,

but in general, wont WPMU slowdown if 1000+ users are on one installation? wont the mysql file be huge ?

The size of the MySQL file doesn't really matter (well it does but not directly) it is more related to the amount of traffic, which is kind of related to the number of blogs you have and your server specs along with the available bandwidth.

Are you running on shared hosting? That too can have a large effect on the responsiveneess of the server, if someone else is doing something that is spiking server load then it will slow your site down as well, in such instances you should contact your host.

1450+ blogs os far and no sign of slowness at edublogs.org... I think that the new alpha version of WP might have a few speed issues but could be wrong there.
