    mrjcleaver, thanks for the input. I see your point, but thought my post fit into the context of this thread.

    lunabyte, thanks so much for the link to the cPanel tutorial. It worked without a hitch - almost :)

    So I'll add this tip:

    My cPanel would not let me delete the .htaccess file, which blocked the installer from proceeding. So I found a workaround by changing the permissions on .htaccess to 777.

    That worked, and everything is installed.

    But now my question is, should I change the .htaccess permissions back to 644?

    (I cross-posted this elsewhere under a more useful heading, by the way.)

    Yes, change your .htaccess file back to 644.

    640 may even be better but without knowing the ownership of the file, I don't know if it would be readable.
