Is it really necessary to NOT allow making a username (as well as blog url) with 'dot' inside?
Yes as having a fourth level subdomain is not supported by some dns servers.
Sorry as I forgot to mention that I use subdirectory urls (example.com/user1).
What would be the answer now?

Honest answer: not a clue. I know you can have the dot in a subdirectory name without issue.
