How to install WPMU under the web root? (8 posts)

I asked this question before, someone answered it and I thought I got it. But I don't. Here it goes again. When I register a blog at wordpress.com, my blog URL will be "http://myblog.wordpress.com", instead of "http://myblog.wordpress.com/WPMU/", which is the case for my site. How can I get away from the directory /wpmu? Following is how I installed the wpmu
    1. Download the nightly build
    2. Upload it to /public_html folder
    3. Unzip the file
    4. Directory /wpmu-2006-04-08 got created automatically which contains all extracted files.
    5. Rename the directory to /wpmu, and continue the installation

    Thanks

Just copy the contents of the "wpmu-2006-04-08" folder to your "public_html" directory and then delete the "wpmu-2006-04-08" directory.

When do I do the copy? Right after the unzip or after the whole installation is done (when the admin blog is set up)?

If it's after the unzip, then I assume that the installation process starts by accessing "http://www.mydomain.com". Right?

    Thanks again.

Unzip, copy/move, and then install :)

OK, I tried. But have a problem. Following is what happened.
    1. I unziped the download. All install files were in wpmu-2006-04-08 directory under public_html
    2. I moved all these files to public_html, and removed the dir of wpmu-2006-0408
    3. Only way I could launch WPMU install page was http://www.mydomaincom/index.php
    4. The install complained that public_html directory permission was not 777. So I changed it
    5. The install complained that .htaccess file already existed
    6. I tried to delete the file. But somehow the file couldn't be deleted though the FileManager interface. I also FTPed to the directory and tried to delete it. But no success.

    Any idea?

    Thanks

    I am trying...
I installed wpmu under /public_html/blog/ (I created /blog to hold the unzipped installation files). So when a new blog is created, it goes as "http://newblog.mydomain.com/blog/". How can I do it so it goes as "http://newblog.mydomain.com". I had issues when I tried to install it under the web root (please see my post earlier in the thread). The other option I am thinking is there is any RewriteRule that can make it work.

    Thanks in advance.

Root folder installation: do you have cPanel? I've read pages that that was the cause of the inability to write .htaccess on the root folder. Try CHMODing it to 644, and then delete it through the File Manager, and rerun the installation.

Also, /public_html/, subfolder /wp-inst/ and sub-sub folder /wp-content/ needs to be CHMODed to 777 during installation. You can change them back after MU is set up. I've also had to change permissions for wp-config.php to 666 manually, but most other installations I've read about haven't had this problem.

    Hope this helps!
