I'm building a new site right now, and buddypress looks like exactly what I want. A social network, with user profiles, messaging, less control to the user (don't want them changing pages or certain options), personal image galleries, and friends lists.

So I'd like some user opinions on how stable it is, maybe some suggestions on other plugins to use with it, and stuff like that. I'm pretty comfortable with hacking some of the code if necessary, but I don't want a bunch of code that has to be constantly troubleshooted and updated.

Before I found out about BuddyPress I thought I would do it all myself. Now hopefully I can be saved a bit of the work...

Since Andy joined Automattic this plugin set is in serious constant development. Parts of it are pretty stable already, but it is still in active development with a pretty steep timeline:

The best bet would be to stop off and test it out on a development install and see how it works. I am pretty sure Andy keeps updating http://testdrivewpmu.com with the latest SVN, but I am not sure if the recent updates have made it on yet. Loads of information to look at:

Thank you. I had already looked at the BuddyPress site (it didn't have quite all the information I was looking for), but this was my first time hearing about the http://testdrivewpmu.com site. It allowed me to see exactly how far along the project is, as well as giving me an easy way to try to get a hold of Andy to find out more directly.

As it is, I think I might just put most of the social part of the site on hold. I am planning on getting a new server soon (if I can afford it), and will probably wait to set it up on there.

Not to be insulting or to belittle Andy's work but almost all of what Buddypress has to offer is available in plugins located elsewhere. (Groups come to mind as not been done yet and you would have to create Page Templates to match the profiles although there are advanced Profile plugins out there.)
