Subdomains Issue with Installation of New Blogs (23 posts)

    I have created the site
    blogs.paradiseparkmasonicclub.com
in order to look at it I have to type in:
    http://blogs.paradiseparkmasonicclub.com/index.php

I installed Word Press in to my subdomain and everything is working. Now I need to install all of the other domains ie. One for the manager, one for the president, etc. When I create a new blog called manager. WordPress created a blog called manager.blogs.paradiseparkmasonicclub.com. So now I assume that I create a subdomain called manager.blogs.paradiseparkmasonicclub.com

Do I need to now install wordpress in to the subdomain manager.blogs.paradiseparkmasonicclub.com. If you try to get there it says "cannot be found" this could be because I just created the subdomain, or WordPress is broken, OR I have no idea what im doing.

    Thank you

    Karla

Did you read the readme.txt file? You have to set up wildcard subdomains in Apache. If you don't know how to do that, ask your web host to set it up.

I have read the readme.txt and added the wildcards. It's still not working any ideas

    No idea without a link.

Are you *sure* the wildcards are set up in Apapce? You can't just do it under your domain management.

You're doing a couple things wrong. You don't need to create a subdomain for each blog, and everytime a blog is created you don't need to install either :P. Do you want your wordpress blogs to be "blogs.paradiseparkmasonicclub.com/manager"
    or
    "manager.blogs.paradiseparkmasonicclub.com"

Because to be honest, that's just too many subdomains lol. Also, wildcards are added for your main domain paradiseparkmasonicclub.com (i can tell because goobledigock.paradiseparkmasonicclub.com displays the plesk page), but not the subdomain you have WPMU installed at, so that's why blogs are not working. Your serveralias should be for the full hostname you have wpmu installed on, which is "blogs.paradiseparkmasonicclub.com".

Thank you for your replies. First to Andrea. My server is at edatarack and I asked them if my wildcards were set up and they said yes. Not sure if the guy I spoke with really knew. How can I change the Apache information if I don't own the "actual server"

Second to MrBrian. So I set up WordPress as a subdomain site and now every time I try and add a blog it forces me to use blank.blogs.paradiseparkmasonicclub.com Which I agree seems ultra lame. Now my site is up and running so when you click on blogs.paradiseparkmasonicclub.com it now comes up. Thanks to hours last night talking to edatarack. If you guys can tell me how to fix the apache problem, or how to stop WordPress from forcing me to use blank.blogs.paradiseparkmasonicclub.com let me know.

    You never answered this:

Do you want your wordpress blogs to be "blogs.paradiseparkmasonicclub.com/manager"
    or
    "manager.blogs.paradiseparkmasonicclub.com"

    Or perhaps even "paradiseparkmasonicclub.com/blogs/manager"

"it forces me to use blank.blogs.paradiseparkmasonicclub.com "

Because you installed it in blogs.paradiseparkmasonicclub.com.

Install it in paradiseparkmasonicclub.com, make sure wildcards are set up for paradiseparkmasonicclub.com, then you'll have what makes sense.

"can I just install it in to httpdocs"

    yes. delete the other stuff.

httpdocs is your root directory, so if you created a folder within it, you would be installing WPMU in paradiseparkmasonicclub.com/newfolder. Understand? Your blogs would either look like paradiseparkmasonicclub.com/newfolder/blogname or blogname.paradiseparkmasonicclub.com/newfolder depending on what blog type you chose. Installing in root (httpdocs) will remove the newfolder part of the url, but i see you have a site there already. You will need to delete it to install in root.

Now what. Ok so I have now killed my word press multi user in the install location of blogs.paradiseparkmasonicclub.com. I killed the database and user and re installed in the httpdocs not under any file. I went to paradiseparkmasonicclub.com/index.php. Changed all the read write permissions

Installed the word press multi user subdomains.

    Filled out as
    blogs database name
    blogger1 user
    board password

Your new WordPress MU site has been created at
    http://blogs.paradiseparkmasonicclub.com/

    Login details:
    Username: admin
    Password: c8aa2e8460d9
    Login: http://blogs.paradiseparkmasonicclub.com/wp-login.php

It says not found. What have I done wrong now, because it was working when I installed it in blogs.paradiseparkmasonicclub.com

I chose blogs.paradiseparkmasonicclub.com as my first site. It said congratulations and gave me login information. But now when I try to login

Why did you fill it out as http://blogs.paradiseparkmasonicclub.com/ when you were in http://paradiseparkmasonicclub.com/?

    Reinstall it again,
    Drop the database.
    Delete htacces and wp-config.
This time, when it say your site name, put in paradiseparkmasonicclub.com.

    Andrea,

I followed your directions. And I have it up and running. So now when I want to create a new blog it's

    manager.paradiseparkmasonicclub.com

I created that, and I get a plesk page. Now I need to create a subdomain for that page am I correct?

    No.

that's what the wildcard subdomain setup does.

    Ask your host;

"Can you enable widlcard subdomains on paradiseparkmasonicclub.com?"

    you're almost there. :)

Also make sure you add the wildcard record *.paradiseparkmasonicclub.com in your domain manager.

Eric who? If you mean in your post a couple up above, that's not anything that goes in your htaccess. those are DNS records.
