I downloaded the wordpress.zip at wordpress.org and folowed your tutorial to enable WPMU. After that, I went to Tools > Nerwork and enabled the subdomain install and installed.

Before the install, I created a DNS entry *.mydomain.com pointing to my ip

And created a new site using the WPMU to midia.mydomain.com. And this are bot working... :(

blogs.dir is only for files that get upload to the extra sites. So, it only gets stuff in it when people upload things.

You won;t need another IP, no. I'm trying to determine if you installed WPMU or not. You get need one or the other, not both.

You also need to create a wildcard subdomain in your DNS records.

Hi Andrea, It is on my main domain and when you buy a VPS you ger a free IP Address, so yes, I use an IP adress and uses the new wordpress 3.0. When I installed it appeared some of the steps at your tutorial.

Need I another IP address?

I created on WPMU an account, and noted that the folder blog.dir were empty, should it have anyfile there?

Did you install WPMU?

Because those instructions are for WordPress 3.0.

Also, GoDaddy requires you to get a dedicated IP to run wildcard subdomains, and your install shoudl be the default site on the server.

GoDaddy requires you to use a static IP.

in other words, it won't work on their servers until you give them more money.

Considering they've been having hacking issues with ANY php script on their servers (3 rounds in the past month or two), I'd find someone else to host the actual site.

My mention another plugin. Would that help?

Not with the initial problem, just a later suggestion to keeping it all straight. running multiple MU installs in one shared account is less than idea. If they are all maintained by you, and you plan on the same (or similar userbase and the same plugins & theme, then I'd suggest looking into it.

While I am not suggesting this is definitely the case right now, when WPMU first came out, GoDaddy deliberately crippled it from working on their shared accounts.

Are you saying there is no way to get subdomain blogs to work on GoDaddy shared hosting?

I'm suggesting there may be no good/easy way to get *multiple* subdomain installs working on one shared account on goddaddy.

As we all know, VPS and dedicated servers are pricey. It isn't time for that yet.

you can get a vps for $20 a month. If you are going to be running multiple mu installs, and you're running a business, a ten dollar a month account is not going to cut it. It may very well be getting close to that time.

Thanks for your reply, Andrea.

As we all know, VPS and dedicated servers are pricey. It isn't time for that yet.

Your answer is clear, then it isn't. Are you saying there is no way to get subdomain blogs to work on GoDaddy shared hosting?

I do have wildcard subdomains set up and working on two domains in my account that are not the primary hosting account domain. On the WPMU installation which is working with folders, the default blog URL is a "/". On the WPMU installation limping as subdomains, it is the domain name. Both installations resolve to the dedicated IP.

My mention another plugin. Would that help?

1. you have to get to sub-blogs working properly first. :)

2. the domains you want to map shoudl resolve the he IP address fo your MU install where they will live.

3. as experienced as I am with mu I shudder in horror at trying to work with it on goDaddy servers. Seriously. For people who *do* know what they are doing, it's a nightmare to work with.

That being said, all is not lost.

On the subdomain issue and them being recommended - it depends. If you're mapping the blogs anyway, it does not matter any more. It used to, but now it doesn't.

on godaddy and wildcard subdomains - they set it up so the wildcard subdomain is set for the *main* domain of your setup with them. So, if you're using another domain where the root of the site is in a subfolder, you'll get the folder name in the URL, as you have seen above. That's not a WPMU issue, it's a "goddaddy sets up servers this way" issue. The only way to fix it (or, IMO, do it properly) is to have a vps or dedicated, so you can edit the apache configs appropriately. Godaddy gets around people installing mu by telling them they "need" the dedicated IP. A wildcard subdomain can most certainly be set up on a shared IP, but mu is more resource intensive, so this is why GD makes you upgrade.

P.S. Maybe I need to know how to configure the domain mapping plugin.

Here are the domains:

http://www.healthierdecisions.com (mu with folders)
http://www.impressiveinvestments.com (mu with subdomains ... not working)

If you ping them, you will see they both resolve to my dedicated IP address and not the server IP.

Sigh...

What a puzzling GoDaddy day it has been for me. :)

I'm not a newbie to wordpress, but I am new to WPMU. That being said, working out the best way to get things done is normally not so challanging as it seemed today.

I secured a dedicated IP months back with anticipation of utilizing MU blogs for a project. My preference is to use subdomains and not folders.

I enabled wildcard dns on the domain of my preference, waited the appropriate length of time, and installed wpmu. The installation script complained that my DNS wildcard wasn't set up correctly. GoDaddy assured me that it was. I uninstalled and reinstalled WPMU again and received the same complaint.

I viewed it as a false-positive and proceeded. WPMU allowed me to create blogs but, when I tried to view them, I got an database connection error. This went away when I installed a plugin recommended by Andrea_R at this thread:

http://mu.wordpress.org/forums/topic/14074?replies=36

But ... the url would only work if it was something like:

http://subdomain.domain.com/domain/

In desperation, I uninstalled WPMU and reinstalled it again using folders instead of subdomains. It works now but, as I said earlier, I would prefer subdomains and they are recommended.

Can someone please provide clear and succinct instructions for getting this to work at GoDaddy? I have an Unlimited Hosting account there and I've been with them since 2002. I'm kind of a fan so I'd rather not have to buy hosting at another service for these projects.

Thanks in advance for any advice and tips!

I had to go through a couple of contortion menauvers to get the install to work because
1) I have an existing site that I need to keep up and runing as I transition it to the new wordpress-mu site. So have an index.html that redirects my users to the old site and have a link for the MU site.

2) GoDaddy seems to be doing something funky with default pages. Haven't figured out where I can define this myself in their user interface yet.

Anyway, I was able to get through a complete install of wordpress-mu and am able to login to the dashboard. But, I'm getting the array* warning in various places and when I visit the site I get a blank page. I'm thinking it has something to do with the theme.

* example when I go to Appearance -> Themes

I can create a blog from the site admin but the link to the blog as a sub-domain goes to the wrong place.

My sites are hosted at GoDaddy. My hosting account is setup under http://www.phylliserck.net and that is where the sub-domain blog links are trying to go.

I created ahost record * that points to my dedicated IP.
I used the GoDaddy feature that says this domain is hosted here to handle the DNS.

I've read several threads here with others trying my same setup and not getting it working. Does anyone have this working at GoDaddy hosting multiple domains? Was there a trick to getting the ahost and DNS records set correctly?

Thanks in advance for your help.

- when you point a domain to your MU install, you; don;t point it to the virtual folder. you point it to the main MU site. Mu will do the blog lookup from there (you'll need the domain mapping plugin too)

- search your database for the /zzz/ blog. Likely it's still listed off in a table somewhere.

But I think it's more the first point than the second.

Hello again.. I have mµ working beautifully where I can add blogs without a problem and going to domain.com/blogs/randomletters shows the wordpress-themed 404 page if there's not a blog in place. The problem is, I set up one called zzz, and domain.com/blogs/zzz was working fine until I decided to point a domain at that virtual folder (as a test).. ever since then, I get the ominous The page cannot be displayed because an internal server error has occurred. error when trying to go to the virtual folder.

Interestingly enough, when I renamed the "blogs" folder to "blogs2", going to domain.com/blogs/zzz yielded a normal 404 as expected. Renaming "blogs2" back to "blogs", the "internal server error" was back again. Again, though, all the other blogs set up still work fine, but it's as if IIS now has some sort of "stigma" towards domain.com/blogs/zzz specifically!

I am suspecting this has nothing to do with .htaccess or web.config and more something on the server-side that has noted/rendered this specific path (whether it's virtual or not) as now unusable. Since it's hosted with GoDaddy my ability to check server settings is limited, so I contacted their tech support -- which usually is relatively competent -- and told them my tale, but their response was laughably vague and obvious that they themselves didn't know how to diagnose this, as they said:

The error appears to be occurring due to the setup of the index.php file you've placed in the directory. This file is instructing your server to search for the folder "domain.com/blogs/zzz" which is causing an infinite loop in the system. You will need to correct your index.php file in order to resolve this issue.

The index.php file is mostly commented out except two lines:

define('WP_USE_THEMES', true);
require('./wp-blog-header.php');

..them saying that index.php is the culprit makes no sense, but for giggles, I renamed it index2.php and, of course, it made no difference. I even went into the admin and deleted the "zzz" blog, but still, the virtual domain.com/blogs/zzz gives the error. My suspicion is my pointing that domain name over to that virtual directory somehow messed some setting somewhere up.. Not sure why what I did would permanently have made that path unusable...

So! My question is, what do you think is controlling this, and how can I (or they) "release" that virtual path to where it can be used again?

Any ideas would be most appreciated! ;)

What type of hosting are you using on Godaddy? You must have at least Deluxe level hosting with Linux, PHP5.

I'd like to host several websites on one install of WordPress mu. I've setup my Godaddy account, everything seems to be working fine, however I cannot seem to add blogs with the 'www.' prefix, only the root domain 'example.com'. I make the necessary changes in MySQL, and the 'website' disappears from the blog listings in the admin section.

Can someone point me in the right direction to simple instructions for setting up individual websites on Wordpress mu and hosting them effectively?

Thanks.

Greets! I just used the convenient little one-touch button in Godaddy to auto-install WordPress 2.9.1 onto my site, but I was really wanting to install/use WordPressMµ .. I'm new to WP so I'm not familiar with what settings might be damaged (or what settings were set automatically by GoDaddy that I would not otherwise be aware of) if I try to overwrite with the WordPressMµ I downloaded... Any suggestions on how to "upgrade"? I would guess it's not as easy as just plopping WordPressMµ into the same directory (with the config file modified to have the proper MySQL codes) would it?

thanks for any input :D

I'm glad I found this thread. I created a subdomain on godaddy to test out wordpress mu/buddypress. Based on the instructions, it looks like I'm going to have to upgrade my hosting account.
