I'm looking to host a potentially busy wpmu install. It will start out small but grow over time. I was thinking of liquidweb.com because they have well priced managed hosting packages (cheaper than rackspace) but I'm not sure how friendly they are with wpmu, I'm running one wordpress with with them there now to test it out, and it is pretty good so far.

I'm also thinking of using dreamhost. I've hosted many domains there in the past, and am quite happy with their system. but does anyone have any experience with their Dreamhost PS service. looks good, and scalable, but who knows.

and there is also bluehost.com, which is recommended by wordpress.org.

does anyone have any comments/experience with any of these, or can they recommend any other hosts that are good. In the end i'll probably be running around 4 or 5 medium traffic wpmu installs. and handful of other domains. nothing too high traffic.

I'm with the gators. They've got knowledgeable staff and are very quick to fix problems. Compared to the competition, they're a bit more expensive though.

    DreamHost is quite okay :)

Have a look over the previous hosting threads. :) People have had issues with both Dreamhost and Bluehost.

I'll do my usual futurehosting.biz recommend.

I would make my usual recommendation of slicehost, but as they have just been acquired by rackspace, I'll have to reserve judgment for the time being.

@cafespain I would say the same. Just waiting to see how this comes around. I took a bigger slice out for a test drive over the past couple of days and it wasn't as good as I expected. Partly, it might be due to the influx of new business....

I had a chance to take a slice out for a spin, and I thought they were pretty good. Probably too steep a learning curve for someone coming from shared though. :)

Knownhost.com still great for me, with excellent tech support

and there is also bluehost.com, which is recommended by wordpress.org.

Just for reference, those are paid adverts.

Any host that you are considering, it would be best to drop them an email first asking if they support Wildcard DNS as that's required by WPMu. You may also want to be up front and tell them that you're planning on running the mu software. Some hosts frown on you using their normal hosting accounts to resell or offer accounts to others and may boot you when they find out what you;re doing.

Bluehost is recommended by wp.org for *single* wp blogs. :)

I use a virtual server at Panix, and have been consistently pleased with them.
