I have searched for hours to find a fix for this problem. For starters, I am new to wpmu, but bu no means new to php and mysql so I am officially at a loss here.
I have tried endlessly to install wpmu on my shared linux 1&1 account and continue to get 404 errors on everything except for the homepage and the admin area. I have found several posts with a fix involving my http.conf, but being on a shared host, I cannot modify this.
Does anyone have a suggestion? I have been pulling my hair out.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My suggestion is to not install MU on a shared account :)
wp-config.php
define('VHOST', 'no');

And my suggestion is to avoid 1&1 at all costs.

"I have found several posts with a fix involving my http.conf,"
That's not a fix - it's an integral step.
Reinstall and use subfolders like dsader suggested.
(or move hosts)
actually subdomains works but subdirectories dont seem to work
i dunno if i made this clear, but im having the same problems but with installing sub directories. i cant for the life of me figure out whats up.
i keep getting infinite loops when trying to log into admin
