Redirecting blogs on subdirs. to subdoms. (11 posts)

    Hi!

    Well, I´ve spend a few days reading this forum and others, understanding day by day a little more about the WPMU installation. My problem is simple:

    I tried first to setup my WPMU in the root directory with the option for subdomains to the multiple blogs, and then I installed a few blogs: my host do not allow me to have access to de WILDCARD SUBDOMAINS, I have tried do negotiate but none..

    Well, here Iám after install the WPMU again in my root, with the SUBDIRECTORY option for the multiple blogs. My problem now is that I want to redirect the users who want to access:

    http://www.blog.domain.com ---> to ---> http://www.domain.com/blog

    My CPanel offers unlimited ADDON domains and PARKED Domains, but.. after reading a lot of posts in this few days I understood that the subdirectories (as the subdomains) work with a kind of VIRTUAL BLOG setup, hope so im being understandable. That means that if I create a subdomain, and then try to put it as an ADDON, well, that cant be possible through the CPanel, cause he offers me to redirect to a file into my html_public/, something like:

    html_public/blog (but it doesnt work.. because it doesnt exist, right?)

    So, how can I redirect new subdomains direction to my subdirectories blogs, and that without having allowed the access to the Apache httpd.conf file, or to the wildcard subdomains.. please, I´ll be really thankful for all your help.

    Sorry for my bad english.

    Hello WPmu users!

    Yes, I actually have the same problem.

    Is it possible to change:
    http://www.blog.domain.com ---> to ---> http://www.domain.com/blog ?

    otherwise I can't access to the new blogs.

    Thanks a lot.

    But why would you want to have http://www.blog.domain.com pointing to http://www.domain.com/blog.

    Either use subdirs on domain.com/blogname (and by using a site alias in your apache conf you can have wwww.domain.com auto redirecting to blogname.com)

    or stick with subdomains on blogname.domain.com (and forget the www please!)

    Thanks SteveAtty for your answer.

    I wanted to do that because the new blog addresses are not working. Mozilla can't find the blog addresses.

    I'm thinking...:

    The blog address is: http://blogname.domain.web-servername.com/
    (http://domain.web-servername.com/ is my home page).

    Is it possible to add "blogname." to have http://blogname.domain.web-servername.com/ ...maybe it's not possible to have multiple "****." in an web address like : http://****.****.****.com ? (I can't find the information on internet) Maybe that's why it's not working...?

    I'm sorry...don't hesitate to tell me if it's not clear enough or not clear at all!;-)!!

    Thanks a lot!

    I think you should find out why this is not working. It's not that wise to try finding such a 'workarounds' as you do :)

    Yes sure VentureMaker!

    That's what I'm trying to do...but sometimes it can be due to 'stupid' things...;-) And I'm trying to find out with my level of knowledge.

    Thanks for your post :)

    Look at your error log, find out if wildcard DNS and apache ServerAlias are set up correctly.

    This should narrow search area for errors :)

    VM - he can't. In the OP, he said his host won't allow wildcard subdomains so he's trying to set them up manually.

    Hello,

    I know the problem it's actually due to my server. I ask my web host, they should change something (don't really know which file) and it should work soon.

    Thanks for your help!!;-) and long life to WordPressMU!

    Gaetan
