i was wondering if it's possible to have the main domain not be handled by wordpress-mu using subdomains?
For example, i would love for my main site to be rails based but still allow people the ability to signup under wordpress mu.

Install WPMU in yourdomain.com/wpmu for example.
Do as VentureMaker suggested. Otherwise, you can have problems accessing URLs (depending on your permalink structure).
