How to set up vhosts? (14 posts)

I am currently on a reseller account, and I have both Cpanel, and WHM. Is there any way for myself to set up the vhost/wildcards though using any of these panels? Or would it be something even more higher up that I should contact my own host about it.

In WHM there is a "DNS Functions" setting... Would anything in there be able to set it up?

unless you have access to your http.conf file you're out of luck. Also sometime cpanel complains when you try to add a wildcard alias for a domain.

I guess if I have to ask, where is the http.conf file located? then I guess it means I dont have access to it, and I am out of luck.

How would I add a wildcard alias for a domain though cpanel? I cannot seem to find anything related to wildcards in it. Unless I am totally looking in the wrong location, as my host has told me that I am able to set up wildcards now.

if you're host says that you should be able to setup wildcards then you should have no problem. A lot of people have found this helpful.

Your host may have also meant they went ahead and enabled widlcard domains, so that means you're good to go.
Install and see what happens. :)

I already had it insalled before my host set up the wildcard. Will this effect it at all?

Though currently I am getting a message that says "There is no website configured at this address." Cpanel type error. (to see for yourself - http://aidan.daydreamz.net)

Though my host did say it would take 24-48 hours for propagation.

I am crossing my fingers that it will all work out correctly. :)

    24-48 hours for propagation

That's when you change stuff at your registar.

Either you have to change something within MU (Not sure where) or your host needs to reload Apache.

I purchased my domain though godaddy.com ... do I need to do something though that? Or is it something I need to do though my WHM (web hositng manager) as I can set up DNS entries...

Submo, you have to reload Apache and Bind. Has this been done?

Link that appears to walk thru the CPANEL/WHM setup.

My host (netrillium.com) has told me that it is standard procedure to reload after any sort of DNS changes, so yes, Apache, and Bind were reloaded after I asked them to set them up.

I have tried following the Cpanel/WHM set up, in the link you provided, though no matter what I put in to the fields it does'nt want to work and the Cpanel error that I mentioned above still appears. I have currently delted the entry for the DNS Functions, and now I just get a Page not Found, typical error message.

Any other suggestions, or ideas that I can use to get everything to be working correctly? Thanks again...

Could you please list what you have in your httpd.conf for this domain?

I do not have access to that file, I would have to ask my host for that information.

I'm about to totally give up on this whole idea I had for my domain, I was only wanting it to be around for family, friends, and well who ever stumbled upon my WPMU site.

DrMike, thank you for all of your help with trying to get, the total idiot that is myself though what should be a simple process.

I will post the file information, once I have recieved it.

I spent hours looking for a topic explaining how to setup the subdomain function for Wordpress Mu but couldn't find anything I could understand.
If you are a dummy like me this page will be useful for you:
