charset horrors (4 posts)

    Upgraded yesterday 1.2.5 to 2.7
It seems that my original DB charset was latin1 (the MySQL default). The new WPMU default is utf8 and that was causing all sorts of ugly/quirky characters to manifest within old posts. So I changed my DB_CHARSET to 'latin1' in wp-config.php and everything looked great, until someone tried to create a new blog and all they got was:
"The blog you have requested is not installed properly. Please contact the system administrator."

So my DB_CHARSET goes back to 'utf8' and new bloggers are happy but old blogs are ugly.

Can anyone help me make everyone happy?
Do I need to get a DBA to convert my backend to UTF8?
