Sub-domains AND sub-directories (5 posts)

Ok, here's one for you. I haven't had the chance to test/try this yet so I thought I'd stick up a quick post in-case anyone else has.

I have an MU site in the pipeline that would suit a sub-directory install rather than a sub-domain one.

I would like the installation to "share" my database server setup (I have a db server with a multi-db system, but would like the new MU install to share the same db's, rather than making another set just for it).

Is it possible for a new install (different virtual host / code / config files) to use the same db's as an existing sub-domain installation?

Or am I just being too lazy for my own good, and should set up some new databases for the new site?

Answers on a postcard to "Oh my, just were does he get these questions", PO box......

Looks like this one allows several MUs share the same DB.

    Am I wrong?

Don't know, I shall look at it thanks.
BUT, I have self-imposed rule of NEVER modifying core files, so will have to see to what extent changes are required

I tried exactly what you are doing. I wanted to set up Mu to handle domains, subdomains and subdirectories. I did what you did - two installs of Mu using the same database - NO GOOD. I set up the subdomain version first and it works (and still works) fine.

Then I set up a second version using subdirectories with the same database information. It could actually see all the blogs from the first install, but could not go to any of the backend for anything but the main blog. It could create blogs fine but could not go into their backend either.

The subdomain version could still get into it's own blogs, but not into any of the new ones created with the subdirectory install. I pulled out the subidrectory install and gave it it's own database.

If you find a solution to this, I would LOVE to see it!
