    @nocomment,

Yeah, at least having this plugin installed and working on my Admin blog will be good;) I'll drop the developer a note, it's worth a shot.

So bottom line - lots of false starts:

Looks like it works - but it keeps overwriting itself with the various different blogs of mu:

Am I missing anything .. if someone has it working "Correctly" please post and help the rest of us out .. this post has been going on for more than a year - with no resolve:

Thanks in advance - for your input:

The problems with this plugin and MU are two fold.

    1) As you noted, it overwrites itself. It would need to create a file in the users upload dir, and then have a rewrite rule where it calls the users file when that file name is called from the site root.

    2) It uses a LOT of resources to generate said sitemap. On a single blog when it's only updated maybe a few times a day, big deal. It's OK. Now add in MU, and when you have enough users for that plugin to be running somewhere almost constantly, and it can potentially cripple your site.

Plain and simple, forget about this. It really isn't needed once google gets hold of your site. At that point, you'll have more problems with them visiting too frequently as Andrea mentioned recently.

One of the reasons for using sitemaps, and google's webmaster tools in conjunction with it, is when your site gets popular enough that Google gives you sitelinks. Sitelinks are those pretty sublinks that appear below the first hit in some searches in google. So long as you've submitted a sitemap Google will let you administrate which links show up there at the bottom.

I should add that google will let you pick which links not to display. It won't give you a choice as to which links to display in the first place. That's a right they reserve only unto themselves. Sadly.

Guys, I guess I am not as sophisticated as you are. I don't even know what MU stands for. Can someone in plain English explain to me what to do if I get an error "Could not write into .../sitemap.xml"? The reason I get this error in my opinion is that I use httpdocs/wordpress/wp-content, while sitemap.xml is looking for httpdocs/wp-content. I hardcoded /wordpress/ into all the appropriate spots in the file, but it didn't help perfectly. I got a message that sitemap.xml was created successfully, but site.com/sitemap.xml was not found. I think I also created new folder httpdocs/wp-content with writable permission, but this didn't help either.
I would appreciate any step-by-step instructions you can provide.
    Thanks in advance,
    Anjelina

Anjelina, you need to go to WordPress support: http://wordpress.org/support/

Thanks, lunabyte, but when I search for sitemap.xml on http://wordpress.org/support/ most topics are not resolved and I didn't find any answer yet. I forgot to say that I have Google Sitemaps 2.16 fork plugin By Arne Brachhold installed with my SemiologicPro Wordpress. So I need solution for that plugin to work properly. Thanks, Anjelina.

Which is fine, but you don't even know what MU is, as you admit.

That's what this forum is for, as it's a completely different beast.

For WordPress support, you need to go to their forum so that your issue can be resolved in a method that supports WP, and not something that would confuse you further.

Unless it pings when the sitemap is updated, what's the point of even having a sitemap? Google's crawler does not need a sitemap to assist it.

I feel the same way, but on some setups Google misses pages and some people really *really* want to make sure every single thing gets indexed.

So, no, it's not *entirely* needed to be in Google's good graces, but for those people who feel the need, there ya go.

(and I will reiterate I have one setup where Google won't leave me the heck alone and crawls my site too darn much.)

I will be trying this out later.

Although I don't quite get why you have to change allowed file type uploads and then upload a pic to a sub-blog.

Upload image is Simply to prove that the Directory /files/ is writable

XML file type IS not a default file type include

    http://www.brilliances.com/how-to-make-the-sitemap-plugin-work-for-wordpress-mu/

This is by far the best and easiest sitemap set up for MU and Ive tried them all this worked a charm there is a link at the bottom of his page where he provides the plugin completely remodified ready for upload into the plugin directory you will still need to set permissions but hey if thats a problem go and learn

the only thing to do is to take care of your .htaccess add this and upload

    ------------------------------------------

    #sitemap
    RewriteRule ^sitemap.xml$ wp-content/blogs.php?file=sitemap.xml [L]
    RewriteRule ^sitemap.xml.gz$ wp-content/blogs.php?file=sitemap.xml.gz [L]
    RewriteRule ^robots.txt$ wp-content/blogs.php?file=robots.txt [L]

    -----------------------------------------------

Instead...look for a simpler alternative..that is pointing the RSS to push to feedburner. Otherwise, you can also ping the others on the long list.

I have been trying to get google sitemap working with WPMU with a domain mapping plugin. All of my blogs have a unique url, but the sitemap that get's generated uses the subdomain url. Do I have this setup wrong, or is there a change that I need to make to get the sitemaps generated with the unique domain?

Thanks for searching first. Depending on which domain mapping solution you're using, you may have to change the urls of the blog at Dashboard -> Site Admin -> Blogs -> The one you're looking at -> Edit and change it to the new one. The url should be listed 4 times.

Some of the google sitemaps plugins out there written for single-user WP just do not work in MU. You won;t get an error, it just won't create it.

Thanks tdjcbe. I tried that, however, when I change the URL there, I am then unable to use the administration for that domain.

I am using Google XML Sitemaps (3.1.0.1) with the domain mapping tool.

    Thanks.

Which domain mapping tool and which specific sitemap plugins are you using? There's a couple different ones of each. How about an author and/or a link please?

And, as always, anything in the webserver's error logs?

Just a quick mention, Arne's updated the sitemap plugin:

I added a request to add in a field to allow endusers to add their verification code as a meta tag. Please considering voting for it. :)

    http://xmlsitemap.uservoice.com/pages/general/filter/top

Please look for the idea labeled: "Add field for Google verification instead of relying on file"

    thanks
