I just got a trial of Mosso cloud hosting (Rackspace's cloud division). I really want to get WPMU working there as it looks really promising. I want to host a whole blog network with buddypress & bbpress on one install. And I really don't want to keep upgrading hardware as I grow.
The problem is that since it is a cloud/grid/cluster server, they do not allow me access to the httpd.conf file. I can do .htaccess work. How can I get this to install on a system like this? Is it possible. I saw one poster talking about getting it working on mosso http://mu.wordpress.org/forums/topic.php?id=3392 .
They don't have wildcard subdomains there. You'll have to use a subfolder (subdirectory) install if you want to stay at mosso.
You cannot use username.yourdomain.com there.
(and yes, I've tried)
Okay I'm fine with using subfolders. Since I can't use the httpd.conf file, how do I proceed? I am looking at your site Andrea, and starting to read everything I can get my hands on...it's just that I haven't seen anything on this type of install.
Thanks for your help. I've read great things about you!

jtle918, you don't need to do anything with httpd.conf if you're going with subdirectory install.
Aw thanks jtle918. :)
If you're going for subfolders, just make sure you pick the subfolder/subdirectory option on the install screen.
It's right there above where you fill in your db details and stuff.
Andrea,
Maybe this should be a separate post, but it might draw more views if people follow the entire thread. I have the Mu install working on Mosso just fine. The subfolders are setup and working but I wanted to do subfolders below subfolders.
I'm working on one domain and I will have niche blogs, and location based blogs (domain names will be pointed to the individual blogs). So I tried creating a blog like this: http://www.xyz.com/blog/city/. Or http://www.xyz.com/blog/state/city/ etc. But when I attempt to create a blog through the admin panel this way, it just creates a blog with one folder like this http://www.xyz.com/blogstatecity/. (disclaimer: xyz.com is used for example only) It just goes one folder deep. Is there any way to make it use a folder structure I want?
If you want blogs for states and cities, you need a plugin for blog categories.
Ahh. I found this: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/top-level-cats/
I think this is what I've been looking for! Thanks.
I'm having a similar problem.... i installed WPMU on zuzuz.net I selected subfolders (since better for SEO I gather)
Install worked fine
Admin dashboard works fine
Admin blog works fine
New Blog / user creation works fine (from wp-signup & from inside admin dash)
All new blog / users confirmation emails are sent and the blog appears in the admin list
HOWEVER, when I visit one of the new blogs, i get a page does not exist error (404 error)
please help :-(
Thanks
