wpmu 2.7 admin page is extremely slow (29 posts)

I Installed the wordpress mu 2.7 in a debian etch server. Installation went smooth. But accessing the admin page function are really slow. I choose the subdomain option to create new blogs.

accessing the main website, hello world page, sign-up.php even creating a new blog also works fast. But If i try to access any functions in the /wp-admin it is slow.

I installed wp-tuner and it shows 99% of time is using by init.

No extra plugins are installed. Interesting thing is that recently I've upgraded another wp mu installation to 2.7 in the same server and it is now working perfect.

I use debian etch with latest security updates.

What can be the problem? Please help.

Did you check server logs? Is there anything wrong there?

is it an "online" server or is it a localhost installation? if its a localhost installation it might be the call-home functions from mu causing the delay...

It is a online server. I checked the apache access log and error log and cant find anything wrong.

    What does server top show?

top shows apache2. No other sites hosted in the server is slow.
Another interesting observation is that, when i tried to install wpmu 2.6.5 it works perfectly. I upgraded it to wpmu 2.7 and it also worked perfectly.. (dont know the magic) but whenever i try a fresh installation wpmu 2.7 the admin pages are really slow, even take 30 sec. to load.

Do you use subdomain or subdir option on new (slow) installs?

I use subdomain for the all installations. When I installed new 2.7 installation all wp-admin pages were very slow. Now After installing 2.6.5 and then upgrading to 2.7, the main sites wp-admin pages are appearing fast but when i created a new blog and try to access its admin page, then it is very slow. :(

    Tried disabling dashboard RSS feeds?

Still not working. My last post http://mu.wordpress.org/forums/topic.php?id=11703#post-70250 is also went wrong. Now both admin pages of the main website and the sub blog created are equally slow. But another wpmu installation in the same server works perfectly.

Is it any way to find what is causing the delay? I think the time delay is in loading some thing in the admin.php because it is included in all pages in wp-admin directory.

Is there any thing i should try to debug the problem?

    Thanks

Try this plugin and see if it helps: http://wpmututorials.com/plugins/remove-remote-calls/

Now it works.. but why? I have several websites in wordpress running in the same server and all most all of them use remote calls. But why wpmu 2.7 in my server shows this problem? No one else report this?

    Thanks

thats what I was hinting at :-) I had read andrea's post about that plugin too.

maybe there are connection problems between your server location and the remote locations?

but all other sites works, even a wpmu which is upgraded from 2.6.

What can be the problem with this wpmu 2.7 installation? What is it blocking from accessing out side pages?

    Thanks

It might be that the other sites haven't got around to calling out yet, or the upgraded site didn't upgrade completely and the wp-cron.php file is an older version or you have a large number of themes / plugins installed on your new site and not on the older ones (the call outs send the themes and plugins you have installed so that they can be checked against the version numbers on the WordPress servers).

It could be a number of reasons.

But, if the plugin to remove the call outs speed things up noticeably then you can be pretty sure that it's something to do with that functionality.

Yes. Now I am sure, the problem is in the plugin update check and theme update check. But in the server php can call remote websites. Even in the problem website dash board, i get feeds and I have tried the rss widget in a site and it also worked. See : http://entevidyalayam.in/ and http://demo.entevidyalayam.in/

Also in the same server http://users.web4all.in is working perfectly without installing the remote call blocking plugin.

    Any clues for debugging this?

    Thanks

I think all your WPMUs have different sets of plugins/themes installed.

So, the problematic WPMU may have a theme/plugin on which update check is stuck...

    Just my bet :)

hmmmm.. :( the problematic wpmu is just a fresh install. no extra themes and plugins.. :(

    OK, my last try.

    1. Disable 'remove remotes' plugin.
    2. Install some random plugin into /wp-content/plugins

    Test loading speed :)

I added the code given in http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/8590 to http.php and it shows

Requesting http://api.wordpress.org/plugins/update-check/1.0/ using WP_Http_Streams took 31.565sWP_Http_Streams has failed with error:Could not open handle for fopen() to http://api.wordpress.org/plugins/update-check/1.0/

In the version of wpmu which is working, the same code shows nothing, which means it is not executing??

    what can be the reason?

A quick google points me at this trac ticket:

    http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/8476

    I'm still reading though.

edit: I vote for putting "remove remotes" back. :)

Has anyone tried this on wpmu yet:

Finally!! My problem got solved... :)

    1) i made the allow_url_include option in the php.in to On
    2) put more than 1 plugin in the plugins directory.

allow_url_include option make some sense to me.. But what is the reason for more than one plugin?

But still add new plugin page is bit slow and always shows An Unexpected HTTP Error occured during the API request.

    Thanks for your support :)

EDIT: I've installed the core control addon and tested the external http access and find only the PHP fsockopen() transport is working in my system. All other transports like php cURL etc.. shows some connection error.

    1) i made the allow_url_include option in the php.in to On

Now wait until someone includes remote shell script and gets ya :)

All other transports like php cURL etc.. shows some connection error.

    Got cURL enabled?

I disabled allow_url_include and it is still working. May be only needed to add more than one plugin.

    phpinfo() shows :

    cURL support enabled
    cURL Information libcurl/7.15.5 OpenSSL/0.9.8c zlib/1.2.3 libidn/0.6.5

OK, now if you remove one plugin (and have just one on your WPMU) - will it become slow again?
Just another shot in the darkness :)

Also, if you disable cURL - will it make WPMU slow?
