Categories vs Blogs (2 posts)

Hello, I am about to convert a newsroom to using WPMU. Currently all of our print material is getting published online with our own in-house system, and the late-breaking news is published on a wordpress blog on our main site.

My question is this: in moving our print content to WPMU (which we want because we will eventually let some readers start their own blogs) should each section of the paper become a category in one blog, or should each section have its own blog?

Sections include: News, Culture, Art, Music...

On the main page of our site, we will have a list of newest posts from each section with links to the appropriate article. We may also want to have a summary of articles in a category that could span blogs i.e. all posts about Obama from News, Art, etc.

I have gone back and forth between whether I should have separate blogs for each section, or just use the same main blog with categories.

One thing I am worried about is a blog dying, i.e. nobody is still writing for it. I can easily imagine an archived category section, where those columns can be browsed, but how do they maintain relevance as extinct blogs?

I have pros and cons for each side, is there a definite right answer?

    Thanks

So, one major drawback I just thought of is having to moderate comments blog by blog. Right now, editors of any section can moderate all of the comments. I'd like to keep this easy, so having all editorial content in one blog allows them all to moderate comments easily, without switching blogs.
