MySQL Version 4.0 or 5.0 (11 posts)

    Hi,

I'm new to this and when I set my datbase up with my host to create a WPMU I had to choose between version 4 or version 5 - but didn't have a clue how to choose.

Is there a preferable version for MU? and would that be the same for a standard wordpress site database?

    Thanks,

    B.

Hmm, just discovered that we're only running 4.1.22 on our boxes. Have to submit a ticket and ask about that.

I hope you mean 4.1 and 5.1 actually. 4.0 and 5.0 are both previous versions. (At least that's how I read the mysql.com site.)

    4.0 also hit end of life on Dec 31, 2008. And 4.1 EOL's on Dec 31, 2009.

Just for that sake, I would be using 5.1, 5.0 if you had to. I know that the wp.org site says it'll support 4.0 but considering the thought of possible security issues, I'd lean more towards the 5.x branch.

    Hope this helps

Hmm, I'll find out about that from my providers, 1and1.co.uk. Pretty sure the two raido button options they offered me had .0 after each - so bit of a worry that then in light of your comments.

Otherwise, what you're saying then is the higher the better - just to be on the safe side. It doesn't (seem to) cost anymore so I guess there's no downside?!

    Thanks,

    B.

I remember around wp v2.4ish there were a few problems with the code when used with MySQL 5.x but I believe they were all dealt with.

From a security point of view, I'd lean towards newer is better. That's not always true of course but in general, it's probably a good rule of thumb.

Is it just me, or did someone say they had issues installing on 1and1?

Thanks, tdjcbe. I'll re-set to 5, I think. Nothing in the site yet, so not a problem.

Hi andrea_r, not so much problems, just I had a choice and wanted to make sure I started off on the right footing, rather than build a site then disclose that I'd chosen the wrong MySQL version to do it with. Personally, as a Luddite I'd have prefereed they just gave me a couple of MySQL's, rather than asking me to have to make a choice. But pleased to go with the principle that newer/latest is porbably the best bet.

WPMU installed okay - though I haven't done much with it yet to test every angle.

While we're here, I'm thinking of learning php for WordPress / MU. Is there a best bet for that type or teaching that would be best recommended? - I mean for being able to do the coding to display posts, excerpts, and all the derivatives of those tasks, etc.

Jump in and break stuff. :D that's how I learn.

    oh, and there's always php.net.

Um, yes problem unless you did a reinstall. I could have sworn that you get to convert formats when moving from 4 to 5 but I'm not in a position to check. (Have 12 minutes left and then I have to leave) You already have tables setup that will need to be converted.

Can someone double check me please? I'm in the middle of something.

    Hi,

I will re-install. I'll delete the thing, then get 1and1 to help me make/set the MySQL to version 5/5.1, then re-install. I'm just taking it slowly at this stage.

    Thanks,

    B.

Just didn't want you to have incompatible database tables if you go from 4 to 5. Not sure if it's even an issue with 4 to 5 but I know it;s been one in general previously.

    Yes, thanks.

If I re-start from scratch with 5 it sounds like all will be fine.

    Cheers.
