Anti-spam for MU? (12 posts)

I've just got MU up and running to start testing it for various purposes. I installed IntenseDebate as it looked like an improvement to the comment system and solves spam at the same time, but tbh it's just too slow and so it's going to have to go.

If I get rid of this, what can we use for anti-spam for comments? Can't use Askimet because of the licensing issues. Surely there must be a suitable plugin?

Are there any other comment enhancement plugins worth using?

    Thanks,
    Dave

Steve, Andrea, many thanks. I'd done a search but come up with nothing but confusing answers. Gone with the basic anti-spam CAPTCHA suggested by you Andrea as I like the customisation.

Got it up and running and customised already.

    yeah yeah - I know. :) I wasn't suggested the captcha as a be-all end-all, I suggested it as *part* of a multi-pronged approach.

    Agree with tdjcbe
I removed all captchas from my sites.

Though I am all in favour of creating jobs in India & Bangladesh and having them paid for by spammers, it is just too much hassle for so many site visitors who do not get paid to crack the captchas..

    Cheers, Bike

Hmm, I'm back in 2 minds about CAPTCHA now. I also run a blog on Wordpress.com which is how I started investigating MU and although quite young, it has already trapped 30 spam comments. Given the project I'm working on is going to be significantly bigger, I think I have to try and find an anti-spam filter.

So is Askimet with commercial licence the only choice for companies?

I can't believe there isn't an OpenSource equivalent?

The problem is discussed here. Be sure to read the comments:

Ah, thank you so much. I'd read that tutorial before and the comments, but I'd been confused by the Typepad name - I couldn't see how Typepad stuff would work with Wordpress. But I get it now. Thank you. Got that installed now and giving it a go.

    Much appreciated.

how the typead thing is going for you? I saw the plugin hasn't been update for quite a while as its date is out of date in wordpress plugin directory.

The 1.02 is the same version that's available direct from Typepad. Still works fine.
