Sitewide Tags stopped working (13 posts)

I seem to have stopped the sitewide tags plugin working correctly. I have the main blog set up, and then two subsidiary blogs which should be pulled into the main blog using sitewide tags.

I had problems getting this working, but then realised that the problem was that I hadn't made the second subsidiary blog public, so sidewide tags didn't include it. Have had it running smoothly for a couple of weeks.

Today, I updated the options page, so that users I add have the New Post, and Edit Post options, and when I updated the Options page, which is where sitewide tags also lives, the second blog has stopped being pulled into the main blog.

The first subsidiary is still being pulled in, but not the second one. I cannot see anywhere where this might have been caused within the blog options, either in the main blog, or subsidiary blog.

The only thing I have noticed is that Sitewide tags insists on putting "tags" in the name of the blog, when I have ticked the "post to main blog" option. I thought that I had had this blank previously when I had it working, but nothing will remove the word "tags" from there now, after saving with blank, it re-inserts "tags". Is this the problem, and anyone know the solution, or is it something else?

A mention of which sitewide tag plugin you;re using would be a plus. There's five last time I checked.

Oh, really? Sorry, didn't realise that. I'm using
    WordPress MU Sitewide Tags Pages
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-mu-sitewide-tags/

I'm quite happy to delete it and use a different one if it will remove the problem?

Check and see if it actually made the tags blog.

It did, and I'm having a swine of a time deleting that blog.

Is this really the best way of creating a "master" blog, or is there a better plugin?

Yes, this is really the best way. I'm finding that generally people have usability issues with it.
Do you have the "post to main blog" checked as well? Because it's an either/or not both.

That's the problem, Andrea, it used to be either/or, but it's now showing "tags" in the name of the blog it wants to use, and the tick box for the main blog is checked.

I cannot delete the "tags" - it just keeps re-appearing when I save.

Any way to delve into the MYsql and remove all mention of "tags"? Or any other way of getting this to revert to using the main blog pls?

Yup, read that. It seems to only cover the problem, or feature, that you need to ensure all blogs, subsid and main, are set to "public" in the Privacy settings?

As I said in my original post, I have made sure that they are all public.

The problem is that the word "tags" is getting inserted into the text field for which blog you want the stories to be posted to, and I cannot delete it. The "post to main blog" tick box is also checked, but I'm guessing it never gets that far, because of this "tags" blog, which I can't get rid of.

I can't even find where it is getting this from in the MySQL - the wp_sitemeta doesn't appear to have the "tags" blog in it, which can only leave it as being inserted by the PHP, but why now? Some sort of default, maybe?

Ah, this is crazy. I've had a look at the sitewide tags php and reckon I can see where in the PHP it is deciding to insert the word "tags" into the text field. I've deleted it, just to see if it works, and now the word "tags" is no longer appearing, but it makes no difference.

I have looked through the MySQL data for the two subsid blogs and I cannot see a difference between them, so I simply cannot work out why this is no longer pulling in from the second blog.

As a test, I turned on the privacy on subsid blog #1, which was the one that was working. It disappeared from the master blog, as it should.

When I turned privacy back off though, it hasn't come back into the main blog, so I am thinking that there is something that occurs if you ever have the subsid blogs set to private? Which is mentioned in the thread Andrea pointed to, but I cannot find these settings stored anywhere other than in Privacy?

If you have that option checked it will *never* get to the tag blog part, so the fact it stays in there is kind of irrelevant.

Checking that box means posts go to the main blog, not to the blog called "tags".

Which I did go over in the other thread. :)

So that fact it's sticking "tags" in there isn't related to the issue you had at the first. the box is checked, it'll pull to the main blog.

*Double-check* that the privacy on blog #3 is public.
make a new post, or resave the most recent post.
It should show up on the main blog.

    Success!

    Thank you Andrea!

Sorry, this is the stupidest problem, mainly because I've already encountered this bug and forgotten about it.

Sorry, I missed the bit about the tags blog on the other thread - can't see it there. Must just be going blind.

Anyway, the problem was the fact that when updating the options, the blog must have been marked as private somehow. Though all the blogs are back marked as public, I had forgotten about the glitch which requires you to simply update each post without a change so that the sitewide tags notices the posts again.

Luckily I haven't that many posts yet, as I'm still developing, so I just went into each post, clicked "Update" and they are all now pulling back into the main blog.

Thanks again. I was going crazy.

I totally missed that either/or bit. Thanks!
