Top Level Domains with GoDaddy (6 posts)

I want to use WPMU to run 2 blogs. Installing and creating 2 blogs was simple enough, but I also want to assign 2 top level domains to each blog.

I have godaddy.com shared hosting. I've also installed WPMU with the subdirectory option checked.

I've looked into this plugin http://wpmudevorg.wordpress.com/project/Multi-Site-Manager and tutorials such as this: http://realhomeincomes.com/2008/10/13/how-to-setup-wordpress-mu-with-top-level-domain-names-on-a-shared-host/

However, none of them seem to cover in detail enough the database url assignments and where in the hosting I should be pointing my domain to.

So far, I've tried making a blog called "ABC", then changing the site url's in the database to "ABC.com" like that tutorial I link to above says. Then I point the domain I own, ABC.com, towards my Wordpressmu install directory. This leads me to the WPMU page. Is WPMU supposed to be redirecting the domain to the blog install?

The tutorial above tells me to point the domain at the root of my hosting. But it doesn't say where WPMU is supposed to be installed. I've installed WPMU in a directory in my hosting, so I'm assuming that changes things.

    Has anyone successfully done this?

Yes it does, you need it installed in the root.

How about the domain mapping plugin? That's exactly what you need.

Then you make a blog, map the domain to it, and park that domain on top of your WPMU install.

I have one installed, but it's not workign. I don't know what values to assign to the fields:

I'm assuming sitename and blogname don't matter. URL should be the domian I own, right? Should path be the wordpress install? I tried this and it takes me to a blog install that has no styling applied to it and only the header text and sidebar show up.

    EDIT: Just tried this plugin:
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-mu-domain-mapping/

And it says Domain Mapping is only available on virtual host installs.

Ok, reinstalled at root of my hosting and installed wordpress-mu-domain-mapping. This time it's a subdomain install.

I added the domain to the site and gave my DNS an A record for my domain pointing to my hosting IP. But after I click the entire wordpress install now redirects to comicsplusblog.com/wordpress-mu/wordpress-mu...

What happened? Is this because godaddy.com doesn't support wildcard subdomains? Is it because I'm not on virtual hosting?

Ah, I see. I was assigning a domain redirect to the wordpressMU site, not a blog. Duh. :P That's why it was freaking out when I assigned my domain.

Now, about that "only works on virtual hosting" message. When I install to subdirectories, I get this message. This plugin does not support subdirectory installs. When I install to subdomains, the plugin works, but GoDaddy's hosting does not support wildcard subdomains.

Question now is, am I supposed to change to virtual hosting on GoDaddy? Or should I find a host that supports wildcard domains?

EDIT: looks like I need dedicated hosting from Godaddy. They only support wildcard subdomians for dedicated hosting.
