does wp-mu use subdomains or subdirectories for new blogs?
or both?
i thought i saw an extra settings page for selection of subdomain, or subdirectory.
but a full re installation i see none of them

It's on the installation screen. there's two radio buttons, right above where you type in your database details. Subdomain is selected by default.
You can't change it via a simple setting in the backend.
If you don't have any blogs, you can change it via editing wp-config.php *after* it's installed. Change vhost=no for subfolders.
