I am running wordpressMU 2.7.1 on a wordpress theme which i like the look and feel. Now the problem am experiencing is; i am not able to display recent posts from individual blogs onto the main blog. The other problem is i am unable display thumbnail pictures onto the featured posts on the home page of my main blog.

the functionality you want, needs some coding and/or plugins. for a start check: wpmudev.org

Then you need either some "most recent posts" plugins from the link Ovidiu put, or use the Sitewide tags plugin. This puts a copy of all posts into the main blog, after you set it up that way.
This will also help pull in the thumbnails for the posts as well.
It's not a matter of editing the theme, it's a matter of using the right plugins.
