I'm ready to setup my first blog.
    They have their own .com.

What plug-ins do I need and what is the procedure to set some one up.
    Thanks.
I'm excited to use my new train set.

You need the plugins you need ;-) That might sound cryptic but only you really know what you want your bloggers to do....

    I see that
    "WordPress MU Domain Mapping"
    is in early development.

I thought that mu, out of the box was set to host multiple sites (blogs) with different domains.

    Am I missing something?
    Maybe asking the wrong questions.

Does wordpress.com use "WordPress MU Domain Mapping", a different plug-in or their own highly customized flavor of mu?

    Thanks.

The domain mapping plugins out there are not in early development. There's hundred, if not thousands of domain mapping blogs using any of the plugins out there now that do this.

"I thought that mu, out of the box was set to host multiple sites (blogs) with different domains."

technically yes. There just wasn't ever any admin area for it. The plugn makes it easier.

"Does wordpress.com use "WordPress MU Domain Mapping", a different plug-in or their own highly customized flavor of mu?"

According to what Donncha told me (the guy who is the main dev on WPMU, and wrote the domain mapping plugin on the wp.org repo and works for wp.com) his domain mapping plugin is very similar to what they use on wp.com. They do have their own custom bits for MU for their specific setup. Like most big sites do.

The process has always been to create the sub-blog first them map it.

If you are looking for users to sign up and use their own domain from the beginning - well, there isn't any plugin out there to do that (yet) and WPMU has never had that option on signup.

    andrea_r,

    Thanks for your concise reply.
I will gladly do the 2-step.

    1) creating the sub-blog.
I went site admin/blogs ad blog.
Easy enough but when I sent to
    http://pcsnw.omoriginals.com/sites

I get a page load error.
How do I troubleshoot the setup of sub domains?
    Thanks in advance.

    Did you configure your DNS?

thanks to you both for staying with me.

    To configure my dns...
    (I use cpanel)
do you mean I need to first create a sub domain from cpanel and then create my blog for that sub?

You need to enable wildcard subdomains for your DNS and your webserver

    when you say configure dns.

    do you mean?
    http://ma.tt/2003/10/wildcard-dns-and-sub-domains/

I did create the a record
    *.omoriginals.com. 14400 IN A 204.10.39.30

    I didn't create the <VirtualHost.....
I believe that cpanel would do that when I create a subdomain.

I can manually create the subdomain.
    wordtest.omoriginals.com

    then create the site.

It doesn't write to the space.

You have to set ServerAlias *.your.domain

And unless you've changed things the domain in the URL you gave does not resolve.

I'm able to create subs from cpanel.
    http://wordtest.omoriginals.com

my mu build is at /sites on my
for this example it tried to create it at
    http://wordtest.omoriginals.com/sites

i removed the "sites" from admin, but there is still no blog there.

It throws an internal server error now.

    right - /sites does
space is there without but, no site.

so we are creating the space in cpanel, but not writing from wp.

    just in.
    when i try to go
    omoriginals.com/sites
    it redirects to
    http://omoriginals.com/sites//sites//sites//sites//sites//sites//sites//sites//sites//sites//sites//sites//sites//sites//sites//sites//sites//sites//sites//sites//sites

    my .htaccess says
    RedirectMatch 301 (.*) http://omoriginals.com/sites/$1

Why have you been playing with your .htaccess?

i use cpanel. it is my (limited) understanding that cpanel will eventually overwrite my httpd.conf.

i was told i could put the redirect in my .htaccess instead.

cpanel is not something I know anything about but why are you using that redirect?

    http://cpanel.net/ is my hosting platform.

with it i can create subdomains.
I would gladly let wordpress do create the necessary subdomains

    Steve,
I just found an install article for mu on cpanel.

I'm going to do a clean install, stay away from my .htaccess and I should be good.

    Thanks for your help.

andrea_r I just came across an article that you linked to.

    Thank you.
