I would like to find out if it is possible or advisable to upgrade from 1.2.5 to 2.8.4a directly without going through 1.2.5 to 1.3.x to 2.x.x and so on.

If you want to do a direct upgrade, it would probably be best to back up your database with phpmyadmin, back up your themes/plugins/etc, then start from scratch. You'll hopefully eliminate a few issues doing a clean install.

From that far back, you really DO need to do at least some incremental upgrades. There's too many db changes between then and now, and the code in between will make sure they get done.
