That's the million dollar question. I am about to go through the pain of losing all my plugins, and theme functionality to setup WPMU for buddypress over my existing Wordpress setup.

If anyone had some real info as to when this merger may, it would be so useful. Really worried about breaking the entire system and spending money to fix that I don't have!

Depends on when 2.9 gets out the door. There's no officially published eta. Just really good educated guesses from those in the know. ;)

Depending on the plugins, you may be able to keep more than you think. The theme shoudl not be painful at all, unless it uses timthumb, but even still, that's being fixed as we speak

If you're that worried, do it on a dev site, not your live site.

Yes, for now that's what you have to do. Export your posts if you want to keep them. Then when MU is installed, just import.
