I'm working with wordpress mu in these days beacause I want to give a blog to all my registered users.

I still have no idea about how this community will grow in the future, but I'm thinking: "I've on day, hopefully, I will have 10.000 users with 10.000 blogs...how could wordpress manage them?

Will it be fast? But the most scaring thing is: my database will grow to 10.000 * 9 tables....

    It's an unbeliveble/unhandable/unmanagable database....

Do I have to change platform?

    Thanks

you will not be able to change platform not if you want the same results, yes you will have a big database but compared to other products you will have a small database, you also get all the features of wordpress...

You are using the best avaliable...

You will "simply" have to buy a bigger server :)

Gotta disagree with that. Maybe if all 10k were being accessed at the same time, over and over again, day in and day out. We have folks here with 10k blogs and they're running it on simple shared accounts. Not every blog is going to be active each and every day.

The cache will probably go a long way to help load as well.

I have a popular phpbb install on one of my boxes that does something like 1500 posts on an average day and it has no problems with being on a shared account.

Granted though, it's a very large shared account due to bandwidth but there was nothing special done there except for optimizing MySQL which the host should be doing anyway.

I agree with drmike. A shared hosting account will do just fine up untill around 10k blogs. Once your at that limit however, you need to either do the math and make sure your shared account can handle more or start thinking about upgrading.

Also, the ability to use a shared account really depends on the quality of the hosting provider. For example, a very cheap hosting provider who oversells like crazy may start whinning if you start using a good bit of your allotted recources. Just do a search on the forums, there have been several threads about good hosting providers.

Which I think was my problem with my previous host. Heck, he's still whining about it and promoting how great his customer service is.

I ran into a few of those hosts myself a while back. I finally just gave up and signed up with textdrive for my personal sites. It's worth the extra money to not have to worry about overselling and other issues.

I have my own boxes but have to host my own sites off of them until I can make enough profit to grab my own box. Shooting for January.
