I am trying to setup wordpress mu on 1and1 web hosting service. I have Mu installed and the front page is being displayed correctly but I am having a problem using any of the smtp plugins. All of them get a connection error. "fsockopen returned Error Number 111"
Is this a limitation of my host? are there any solutions for this problem?

Error 111 is access denied. You need to talk to your host about how you send mail via PHP.
If they've blocked it you may have to use one of the plugins which allow you to specify an external email host such as Google.

I have tried the various smtp plugins and have tried using the gmail smtp server but I receive the same error message. At this point, I think it is on there end, but I have not heard anything back from customer support yet.
If you get it using the gmail servers then its something on your end...
Have your hosting company blocked outgoing mail ports?
