i want to run multiple blogs on my site, but my host appears not to allow me a domain like http://www.blog1.mysite.com , since i get an error message if i try to visit a userblog.
i remember when i went through the setup of wordpress i could choose to have domains like the above ore http://www.mysite.com/blogs/blog1
can i change that setting now, after everything is setup, ore must i do a backup of the theme, the plugins and re-install WPMU?

Same question, i get the feeling many are having issues with this and there's no FAQ on this.
Should we reinstall all together to try to get this to work?

You can change it. You need to change your config file to allow you to use subdirectories and then you need to run a set of updates on your database.
However if you've not got many posts it might be easier to export those posts and start again.
