Using Word Press with temp URL (6 posts)

    Hi there,

I have just purchased a hosting plan to use with a wordpress installation. I am redesigning a site and so do not want to change the DNS on the domain name to point to the new server until the new site is ready.

I am using a temp URL given to me until the DNS has been updated:

    http://234.33.45.67/~username/wp-login.php for example

This gives me the login box as normal, but when I try to login it tries to redirect me to:

    http://www.sitename.com/wp-login.php

But this will not work as the DNS are not pointing to the server.

How can I get the worpress install work with the temp URL until I am ready for the DNS to be switched over?

    Thanks

    Tony

WPMU needs a proper domain name to work with, it wont work with IP addresses.

DNS updates should take only a few hours to propagate

If you can't wait then put that IP address and host name in your local hosts file on your client PC.

    Hi Steve,

Thanks for your quick reply. Ok so there is no way around this unless I use a domain name?

How easy is it to change once I have created the site with a temp domain and then swap it over to the correct domain?

I am very new to wordpress so not sure how I would do it. Would I just get the host to change the domain on the account or would I have to make changes elsewhere?

    Thanks

    Tony

PS I should say I have to create the site and am creating this all online rather than on my PC

    Its a pain changing things.

Its your PC which isn't getting the right DNS information. So if you put the IP address and host name in your PC hosts file then your PC will then connect to the server correctly using the proper host name.
