Unauthorized Update (8 posts)

To make a long story short an unauthorized update was made to my WPMU site http://wishfoundation.com now my site has many issues with it.

First I would like to say that I had spent many months including paying good money for help where needed "quite often" with setting up this site and someone "unothorized" went and updated my WPMU to the new version.

Now with this update I have many issues with plugins, widgets etc.. that I do not know how to fix. The guy helping me out made it clear to me NOT to upgrade my site and it would work fine. I HAD NO ISSUES WITH THIS SITE PRIOR to the upgrade, now the issues have me very frustrated.

Now with me being somewhat of a novice, "after spending months trying to get a site up and running with no glitches" I am actually contemplating deleating the whole site and giving up on it. Just because some F(&%$#! looser idoit clicked on update.

My question is; Is there any way that an upgrade can be undone? I believe that I was on 2.7.1 and now all it says is "Thank you for upgrading"!
PS: I do not have a backup of my site!

*NOTE: before you do this, BACK UP. Bakc up the databse, back up all the files, then downgrade.

Yes, if you manually put back the 2.7.1 files. Go here in trac, and get them from the link at the bottom of the page.

    http://trac.mu.wordpress.org/browser/tags/2.7.1

I do strongly suggest that you figure out what else will eventually need upgrading, because to leave your site that far back, and never upgrade, is a BAD IDEA.

At some point, your site WILL get hacked.

So, you can put it back for now, but please makes plans to upgrade soon in the future.

Your best bet is to make a dev site, put a copy of your install there, upgrade it and find all the things you need to fix there.

(Ahhhh.. now that I've gone and looked - yeah, if you're using buddyPress too, you have to make sure it gets upgraded as well. that's probably 90% of the issues you're facing.)

You know, after further thought - since the site seems fairly operational still, and usable - I'd really be more comfortable if you got someone to quickly sort out your existing issues so you can stay upgraded.

Hello Andrea, hmmmmmm as expected, never any good news...

I already knew that an upgrade would give me problems but I guess my intruder did not!

I guess somehow I am going to have to wait a bit and try to find funds to put towards getting someone to help me out. Sad thing is that I had already paid someone to iron things out for me "a good job was done and it lasted 4-5 months without a glitch" but I guess I will have to start all over again. SAD, I will think about this one for a bit. :-(

    Thanks again there bud.

I still cannot believe you didn't have a back up. If the site was that important and so "fragile" then you really should have had a backup.

No, you don't have to start all over again. :) This is part of ongoing maintenance to a site of this size & caliber. :)

Welcome to the world of sys admin. :D

    (and yeah, start scheduling backups)

Get with your host that provided your site. They themselves may have a backup. Or, after all this is dealt with, offer backup services for an additional fee.

I know it is stupid not to have regular site backups, "my last backup was a couple of months ago". Main reason for my lagging behind in this area is that for me to do a full backup of my site I have to actually do it through my Cpanel to my own pc and currently where I live I am on dialup! That means that this would probbaly take a few days to accomplish...... arggggggg

My old backup is wayyyy too old to use!

Maybe in the near future I will have to hire someone to iron out a few glitches for me once I dig them up... I can do some of the work myself as I do know a bit of stuff but being away from it for many years technology has run away from me....

I just hate to keep spending money on a site that is just a bit of a hobby for me, this site earns no money it just gives me a bit of pleasure as a hobby, and it still enables me to do a bit of site design, graphic design ect...

PS: I did like using the WPMU platform I guess I just don't know it well enough to be able to do it 100% by myself!
