I want to run a kind of 'network' of wordpress sites with similar designs but multiple domains. Would I be better off just using two Wordpress installs (one site is already running, and has been for some time). I'm thinking things may be easier to keep in sync with WPMU, but am I just unnecessarily complicating things?

Um, why not just wait till 3.0 comes out, then fire up the network on your main blog?

Oh, well that seems blatantly obvious now... thanks! The problem there is that I can only use subdomains for sites, but all that means is I'll need to set up some CNAME records. Thanks!

Um, no. You have to pick subdomains or subfolders to start, but them you can use the domain mapping plugin to use a FQDN for each site/blog.
