Well, first of all: BIG THANKS to all the folks doing the WP software and letting us play with it!!!!! It is totally awesome. on to the issue...

I am getting some success on godaddy with limitations. :-<
But it actually works to my advantage this way, I just want it to work the way it was designed because I have some personal issues with ego I guess.

To make it work: I setup the sub-domain first that I will use for my blog through the wp blog creation gui's.

I do have the wildcard set in the a-name record and I can ping anyname.domain.com I want, but if I do not setup the subdomain through my hosting panel on a name by name basis, I cannot get it to work.

I get the following error message when I try to access the link sent via email from the register a blog page
    -----------------------------------------
    Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /wp-activate.php on this server.
Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Apache/1.3.33 Server at AppStuff Port 80
    -----------------------------------------------

perhaps someone will see a permisson problem or htacess issue that needs tweaking

you can test this yourself if you like:

ping anyname.gospelguild.com and you get a hit
go reg a blog at http://www.gospelguild.com and get the mail

    WP Rules !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    cheers

"I do have the wildcard set in the a-name record and I can ping anyname.domain.com I want, but if I do not setup the subdomain through my hosting panel on a name by name basis, I cannot get it to work."

Probably because anyname.domain.com redirects to the main page.

You're having to set them up manually becasue Apache hasn't been configured for wildcard subdomains. honestly, I can't even remember if GoDaddy will even let you do that, but I do know wildcard subdomains will not work properly without changing the httpd.conf file in Apache. Doesn't matter what else you do.

    true, to all the above

I would imagine that GD is not likely to alter the httpd.conf as they farm out sub-domain creation based on the service level you pay for. Basic hosting does not get unlimited sub-domains and this would bypass their account scheme in some ways.

Thanks for filling in the info gaps :->

Or, like some other hosts, they may force you to buy a static IP for the low price of $X/month.

    Hi Andrea,

I did following steps to setup Wildcard DNS..
    1. clickd on Add New A Record.
    2. Put "*" in Host text Box
    3. Put IP Address(10.0.0.2) in Points to text box

Now, I am getting same error.. There is no resolution..

remember, i have installed WPMU in yourdomain.com/blog/ loation...

Um, where are you getting 10.0.0.2 from? That's a restricted IP address, not for internet use.

You also have to modify the apache record as well. The readme file links to an article that goes into details on how to do it.

remember, i have installed WPMU in yourdomain.com/blog/ loation...

You're not trying to do subdomains with that setup, are you? if so you need to place the files within root, not a subdirectory.

edit: Andrea tells you that previous in this thread. Please review what folks have posted to you.

You need to have either a Deluxe or Unlimited Linux hosting plan and add a dedicated IP address (additional $3/mo.) to make it work. And make sure you add the A Record (*) that points to the dedicated IP address.

I have successfully setup WPMU - subdomain method AND created subblogs from the wordpressmu menu.

If you're installing MU as the subfolder option (domainname.com/username/), then you don't need to worry about any of the above.

If you know it is an .htaccess problem, this will get you through: http://zacvineyard.com/blog/2008/10/24/wordpress-godaddy-and-permalinks/
