I'm trying to use subdir. I installed wordpress MU 1.0 inside the root directory, no ther cms installed. I indicated to installer to use http://www.domain.tld but when I finish the install it keeps trying to go to domain.tld even when I remove the two lines in htaccess. Default themes do not load I can see only text it's impossible to use the site because it keep trying to redirect to bad url.
the system always delete the www. for some logic...
you have to set your own installation to not use the www. if you want to deal with this specific matter.

I think this can be flagged as a bug. I'm correct?
www. it is just a subdomain so I don0t understand why you can use correctly with sub.domain.com and not with http://www.domain.com
No, not a bug. The whole Internet is moving to use domain.com without the www. Which is *not* a subdomain.
If your site can't be found without the www, then it is a problem with your host.
@andrea_r: Actually www *is* (no textile here :P) a subdomain regardless the use you give it, for instance i may have my site set up at http://domain.tld and keep an informative page on http://www.domain.tld to let my visitor know why it is not necessary to use the www.
I´ve not played around with mu enough, but in case the www is automatically removed, that should be considered a bug in the system.
I think they consider it a feature. :)

I have to say that it's indeed a bug :( .
I made the exact .htaccess conf with lifetype and all went good.
Wordpress MU just ignore the .htaccess directives.
I tried to install it in root without other cms, removed standard htaccess redirect that point always to nowww domain and add a 301 redirect from domain.tld -----) http://www.domain.tld but nothing happen.
If I use http://domain.tld It doesn't do the redirect.
Please remove this "feature" and keep a "neutral" point of view :) (It will be also VERY useful when you have multiple cms in root).
Donncha I don't want to switch to LifeType! :)
Sorry, the no-www feature will be staying.
approved.
the Internet 2 phase degrade the use of WWW. even if some geeks think it's the norm...
if your host require that a www. be present in front of your domain means it's not a real host but a virtual host on shared domain that requires the www. to set the path for your httpd.conf file.
if you require to have the www. thing in front of your domain, use the trigger provided here in a different topic, that would do the trick... (use search engine!)

Fine. :), no problems at all but I have to point out that there are many situations where a http://www.domain.tld is better than use only domain.tld.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No-www
