Is it necessary to have a knowledge of code in order to install and maintain Wordpress MU?

if you are not to "code" things to make it work different, no you don't need to learn to code...

this forum may look full of coding, but it is to answer specific requests...

you just need to know how to install things on your webhost to make it work... -- you can request the help of your webmaster if you don't !

Actually, I would disagree with that. If the op installed it and didn't run into any errors, and didn't want MU to do anything other than what it does by default, then no, he wouldn't need to know how to code.

And even if you don't know how to code, you should at least have a passing familiarity with HTML, CSS, mySQL and PHP to be able to maintain things and answer questions from your users.

If you are planning to go in and make changes over everything, then I would say you need to know how to code.

I think a better question to ask one self is if you're willing to try to figure out things for yourself. If you're the type who would rather post 'I need a video plugin. I want someone to point me to one!!!! And tell me how to install it!!! Why won't anyone help me?!?!?', then WPMU is not for you. If you are willing to take a shot at doing a search here in the forums, read an install file and maybe make an edit or two in a file, then you shoudln't have any major issues with WPMU.

I don't mind helping folks but we have way too many people who are expecting handouts around here.

That should be slapped across the top of every forum page. :)

I forgot to add you should have a willingness to jump in and learn these things.
