When a user creates another user on their blog, does it register that username site wide or only on that blog. in other words if "misskitty" creates user "misspuppy" will someone else be able to create a user "misspuppy" on their blog? hopefully that's not too confusing?

also, is there anyway that we can disable users from creating other users?

That misspuppy user will be global as well. Currently on WordPress.com the adduser function has been disabled. Maybe it should be removed by default? The "add user from community" function is still there of course.

yeah, i'm thinking it should be removed by default. I don't see any use for it. There could also be problems such as a misspuppy wanting her own blog some day. Definetly keep the add user from community though.

btw, I just recieved an wp.com invite and thought I would let you know that andrew billits and andrew cohen are both me. They're both legal names, don't ask lol.

I guessed they're both you. I checked the sites on your sig in a mail you sent me. Thought you'd probably benefit from seeing what wp.com is doing!

yeah, thanks for the invite. Is the feedback button wp.com specific or is it in the general wpmu source?

Hmmm... am not too sure about getting rid of add user, a ton of people at edublogs use their blogs as group blogs or are really attracted to wp precisely because of the funky user system.

    I don't think it'd get used otherwise.

I know it's a pain but it's good functionality and it'd be seriously missed.

misspuppy can always just grab a new user ID surely?

Howabout making it a super-admin option... allowing you to turn it on or off for all (or individiual) blogs?

And hey, I'm jealous... have always wanted two names!!!

An option to turn it off would work just fine. As for the names... two words, junk mail :P

I'm going to comment it out, but I'll post instructions here for you to uncomment it as it'll be easy to do.
What I hope will happen is that once wpmu gets more social features everyone will have their own blog and we'll have communities that collect together blogs. This will compliment the multi-user aspect of WP and make people more aware of each other and hopefully foster good feeling and a strong community feeling.

@donncha: what social feature do think WPMU will require? some of my suggestions:

    • easy sharing of images (maybe with a (mediawiki-like) plugin that makes of [[image:funny.jpg]] a link to my image and with [[donncha:image:funny.jpg]] a link to your image).
    • sharing content (a shared wiki or pages for a group)
    • a default theme with recent blog posts from all blogs (like blogsome.com)
    • global search
    • user groups (or is there already something like that?

Those are all great ideas but we're still building the more basic functions of the site out. Keep them coming!

Thanks Donncha, that sounds like a good simple solution.

Is there a way for the main admin to add a user? I just installed MU and am still learning, but I one of the blogs I want to set up is for a married couple. For example: johnandjane.mydomain.com. As I understand it, this means I set up a new blog with a username of johnandjane. I'd like, however, each spouse to be able to post under their own names. How to I add a user "john" and then a user "jane" - I know I can't let them do that themselves, but I also don't see any way inside the main admin blog to do this - I just see ways to "add user from community." I don't see a way to add a brand-spanking new member without giving them their own blog.

You will need to uncomment the code first or you can set up 2 accounts. one account will be the johnandjane another one will be either john or jane and add this to the johnandjane community. After that you would just change the display name so they can post as John or Jane.

Doncha said he would post instructions for uncomment the "Add user" option.
I can't find the instructions anywhere.
    Help, please

I would also like to know more about user groups. Is there a such thing?
