can i add a section to the register form, where a user can choose avatars? like in phpbb? and display it to the users page on the header?

what users page do you mean?
what do you mean by on the header?

can you explain that a little bit more detailed so we can actually answer your question.

p.s. there are avatar/favatar/gravatar/comvatar plugins which can you can use to assign avatars to users and display them where ever you want...

I think he's talking about the user profile page, as is seen on wp.com ovidiu.

This would be really cool, a place to upload your images, and then auotmatically set it as your local gravatar.

well, but with a decent avatar plugin you can set a local image as avatar... you upload it with the usual file upload feature of wpmu then go to the avatar section and give the path to your local avatar...

try the gravatars plugins (one from skippy or a better version from zenpax) and maybe combine it with the comvatars plugin

I get what you're saying ovidiu, but that's really an unelegant way of doing that.

I think we should try and find out where the gravatars plugin is setting hte local gravatar and then add a basic image upload form to the user profile page.

i dont want that the user upload his own image, only to choose from a specific list of images
