Subdomains or folders (9 posts)

    Just wondering...

For a fair while there was a strong recommendation with WPMU that users choose subdomains (myblog.mysite.com) rather than folders (mysite.com/myblog).

    Is that still the case?

Are there any reasons why subdomains might be preferable to folders from a technical perspective?

Or that some aspects of a customised subdomain install (plugins etc.) might not work with a folder based one?

Any thoughts would be mucho appreciated!

    Cheers, James

from what i've read plugins may be an issue. folders may be better for search engines. mu definitely prefers to be installed in root, installing to yourdomain.tld/wpmu may cause issue if you or your users are used to using the www

    i.e. this will work

    yourdomain.tld/wpmu/username

where as with the www it doesn't work out of the box and i'm slightly wary of fixing that one as it may cause problems with later releases/plugins but some do so

    http://www.yourdomain.tld/wpmu/username

    I'm currently installing as

    wpmu.yourdomain.tld

and intend to offer blogs as

    wpmu.yourdomain.tld/username

which is kind of a mix of both but using folders...

They're "prettier", and more "special" to the end user?

That's the first thing that pushed me to use subdomains, and to be honest it's what carried the most weight.

The next thing, was reading through the forum here, looking into this very topic. After noticing that some things don't play nice with domain.tld/username, that finalized it.

Is that still the case though (is I guess what I'm asking)?

    Beats me. :D

Even if it is no longer an issue, it wouldn't have swayed me from subdomains.

SEO is key to me... I'm going with folders, especially as I don't intend (yet) to have more than a few dozen blogs. I prefer the unified search engine ranking.

Some things are harder. That's okay.
    Wish me luck...
