To me, the easiest way would be to add a plugin and hook into wp_head.

Agreed but we've run into a few issues with trying the two different CSS files together in the wp.com forums.

The mu-plugin issue, I was thinking of using that Paid options bit I came up with a few weeks ago with the addition of an options check for the blog.

    Ahh, makes sense.

I'm wondering what the issue would be spcifically, other than "essentially" downloading the same size css file twice, which would cause it to hose up?

I mean looking at other plugins that do something similar in practice, like Tiger Admin replaces the default stylesheet in the back end, I wonder what the deal would be.

More of a misunderstanding issue with the enduser.

What I would really like to do is on first load of the editor, have the CSS file for the theme load into the editor as a beginning and allow users to work off of that. Loading an empty file like that occurs over at wp.com is not a good idea in my opinion. Have the enduser start with a template and only have that template load.

That would be a nice thing.

Essentially let them change colors and such, maybe a little more.

It might be something I play with at a later date. On my plate right now is a facelift, a couple dozen new themes, and some overall improvements and additions.

Later this spring, maybe early summer, it's "on the list" to begin rolling out additional "premium" features.

File vs db - it's subjective because there are good and bad things about both but the custom CSS is stored as a blog option on wordpress.com - as we use memcached then the css is basically stored in memory all the time and it's quickly accessed when needed.

I see that themes.php has an "edit css" option on wordpress.com, but I can't find it in the WordPress MU code. donncha, is this in non-shared code?

It is. That, the avatar system, the tag system, the friend surfer, the domains, the upgrade system, and some other stuff.

We have workarounds for most of it except for this.

Thanks for the info drmike. You answered another question I had, which was if we could use their tagging implementation, which is particularly nice. I wish I could just use wordpress.com, but this is our company intranet.
