I have successfully installed WPMU (http://<server name>/wpmu/) on my Windows XP box running IIS 6. I am able to do all sort of admin things (i.e. Admin site at "http://<server name>/wpmu/wp-admin" is working just fine), but when I create a new blog using following steps, I am facing problem:

    1) go to blog home http://<server name>/wpmu
    2) click on Create a new Blog link, opens wp-signup.php page
    3) enter "user3" in the username and entered a valid email adress
    4) clicked on Gimme a blog! link
    5) entered blog name and blog title as "user3" on next screen (url still showing wp-signup.php) and unchecked privacy checkbox
    6) clicked on Signup >> button
    7) screen displays the following message:
    -----------------
    <server name>/wpmu/user3/ Is Yours
But, before you can start using your blog, you must activate it.

Check your inbox at user3@yahoo.com and click the link given.

If you do not activate your blog within two days, you will have to sign up again.
    ----------------------
    8) I go and checked my mail and this is what i got in mail:
    -------------------
To activate your blog, please click the following link:

    http://<server name>//wpmu/wp-activate.php?key=13bda34ab90919ee

After you activate, you will receive *another email* with your login.

After you activate, you can visit your blog here:

    http://<server name>//wpmu/user3/
    -------------------
    9) I click activate url and it says:
    -----------------------
    All set!
    Username:
    user3
    Password:
    <some passowrd>

    View your site or Login
    -----------------------

    THE PROBLEM STARTS HERE!

    10) When I click on "View your site" link (as I see "View your site or Login" in step 9) it takes me to http://<server name>/wpmu/user3/ and ends with error "The page cannot be found"
If I click on Login link it takes me to http://<server name>/wpmu/user3/wp-login.php and page with "The directory name is invalid." message is displayed rest is classic white page....

Can anyone help me please? I have been trying to fix it since last 3 days and scanned all forum posts (few related but of no help)....

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all :)

To be honest, I don't know if MU is compatible with IIS right out of the box. It relies VERY heavily on apaches mod_rewrite, which IIS isn't capable of. The only IIS fix for permalinks I've seen have either been via a special filter, or having <site-url>/index.php/what/ever/here/.

Since the main site isn't anything special would explain why it works fine, but when it starts getting into url rewriting is probably why it's puking.

Not to say it can't work, in some dilapidated form or something, but I won't promise anything. Maybe someone else can chime in.

    Of course, I'm very anti-microsoft, so I wouldn't touch IIS. ;)
(Insert long microsoft sucks rant here, ending with gates getting kicked in the junk. :D)

As an alternative, you could run apache. There's Apache Friends (or something like that) for your platform (it's free.)

    FYI:

    http://mu.wordpress.org/forums/tags.php?tag=iis

IIS isn't officially supported, and according to the requirements on the download page it specifically says apache and mod_rewrite (sym links too).

Good thing apache is free. ;)

Thanks a ton for providing me the details on the issue.
I shall also check the IIS tagged posts :)

I am pro-microsoft because I earn my bread out of MS products :) otherwise I am fine with Apache (Friends) also. I would explore that part too...

    Thanks again!

    Cheers!

    Updates:

IIS tagged posts did not help. Most of them are talking about same stuff with no real help.

I am trying Apache Friends for Windows...lets see :)

I too am trying to get WPmu and IIS to work... alas... my pain looks similar to shokie's.

I am not willing to give up on getting WPmu to work with IIS because I have a bunch of other ASP stuff running and I really don't want to have to fiddle around with running two web servers on the same machine (or trying to run asp on Apache on win... blech!) call me crazy... asp and php.

Anyway, I did get Wordpress working on IIS with the 404 permalink workaround from Keyboardface... but I can't get past this problem on MU.

Has anyone else out there tried this?!

Zappoman: Please believe me that you cant run WPMU on IIS because it uses very specific features that are not there in IIS web server. single user version works just fine.

I am able to run WPMU on Windows box only after installing Apache (Friends - i.e. XAMPP) and its working absolutely fine now. Thanks a ton "lunabyte" for straight references. :)

In your case you can install Apache on same box and configure it to run on some other port (other than 80 - default for IIS). Best of both worlds :)

Well, one of the WPMU requirements says you need to run Apache, so....

Ok, so I gave up on trying to get WPMU running on IIS. Maybe someday it will work, but I've spent the last couple days trying to get things to run with Apache on Windows.

Here's where I am now... I get past the install, and then when I try to access any page (post install) I get a ton of repeating 302 redirects that cause my browser to go into an infinite loop.

I'm running Apache 2.0.59, I've tried both PHP 5.x and PHP 4.x, but I get the same behavior with both.

I realize this topic is about IIS, so I'm going to search the other forums looking for an answer. If someone can help me please let me know.

    Thanks!
