Just another place offering blogs, I have set up a wordpress mu site on http://www.blogernews.com and installed over 100 themes on the site. Please let me know your thoughts on the site and any ideas that you might have for improvements. Installing was a breeze, thanks worpress for making a great script.

    Thanks again

I was going to mention that I hope you had tested all of those themes but I saw the comment on this post and do hope you will go back through and fix all of the themes that you have removed credit from. That's really not cool as well as against the GPL.

"Technically", if the files in question are not being redistributed, the link can go if it's GPL. Letting someone use it on your site isn't distribution. :-\

I'll be the first to admit though, that any theme that has spam links in the footer gets any and all links removed. It's a disgusting habit that has been gaining momentum lately, and I hate it. Mainly because a lot of the end users of that theme know nothing more than to upload and activate. It's no different than link farming, just in another disguise.

Of course not all theme authors are slutty spammers. Those I have no problem keeping, unless I go through and hack the theme to death to make it validate, display correctly, etc. But it's more than one line edits I'm referring to. I'm sure we all know the couple of themes out there that need a ton of work. :-|

Now, if the links are removed, and someone says they made the theme, it's definitely a violation.

I've been spending absolutely ages validating and correcting themes for our new project. Its taken so long that so far I've only managed to incorporate 20 but they are now all fully XHTML 1.0 Transitional, CSS 2.0 and WGAG Level 1 compliant.

It amazes me some fundamental errors that seem to be apparent across many themes. Simple things sometimes like not escaping Breaks '<br>' instead of '
' drives me nuts. Mind you i've noticed that many don't validate their code across the internet.

However i'm happy in the fact that the basic theme was designed by someone else and that, through my efforts, my members will have fully compliant code.

I then edit the footer links and remove all the crud with just a link that says something like "Theme designed by XXX" where XXX is the link to the authors website and then links to XHTML and CSS validation.

I'd never dream of not crediting the original author and think that a link back to the designer is the very least you can do.

I agree, in part overall. Except for the ones that want to spam their casino, or other whatever junk. Then, there are some themes that link to non-existent pages as well, or don't link to the theme at all. In cases like that (usually for themes from themes.wordpress.net), I'll link to the theme page there instead. So if someone wants to find the theme, they can.

I'm not saying not to link, just that occasionally I won't for various reasons. Spam links being the primary one though.

I asked the person to let me know what themes he spoke of because there are so many on the site, and I will reupload the theme unedited as long as there aren't spam links in the footers. have no problem giving credit were credit is due. I appreciate all of the hard work that people put into some of these thems making them available to the public to use.

The GPL also covers use. While I agree with the spam links and don't have a problem with them being removed, (Actually I just don't use the theme) creator's credit should remain.

One wonders why they were taken out in the first place then.

One of the reasons why I don't release my own themes. (Well, that and they really suck.)
