Feed does not validate (19 posts)

I've searched and read all of the threads on this topic. I've looked for blank spaces and I've run out of ideas. I don't have any plugins installed. Here is the results from http://feedvalidator.org. What would cause a blank line at the beginning?

    Sorry

    This feed does not validate.

Simple. You don't have a feed there. The URL is incorrent. What are you trying to poll? Are you trying to poll the comments for your main blog or the comments for all of your subblogs?

I didn't realize I needed to do anything more to set up the feeds. I'm using the default links in the footer.

I'd like to have a feeds for new blogs, posts to individual blogs, and comments. Did I miss something in the setup? If you can point me to the documentation, I'll try and work it out myself.

    Thanks for the help.

You don't have anything else to setup. You just don't have a feed at that URL.

For the individual blogs like http://allalaskans.com/anchorage/ you have them in the regular place. In this case:

    http://allalaskans.com/anchorage/feed/

You don't have any posts yet on your main blog. Therefore you don't have any feeds yet for that. That's probably why you're getting a 404 for it.

I guess I'm just dumb as a post, because I'm not getting this at all. I posted and made a reply in the main blog and I'm still getting the same error when trying to access the feed

"XML Parsing Error: xml declaration not at start of external entity
    Location: http://allalaskans.com/feed/
    Line Number 2, Column 1:<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>"

I have the same error in http://allalaskans.com/anchorage/2006/11/14/test-post/feed/

I know it has to be something really simple I'm missing.

I see the error. Something strange is going on.

I wonder if the file wasn't uploaded in the wrong mode or something maybe?

Try overwriting it with a fresh one, maybe.

Which file should I upload lunabyte?

Should be the rss2 file. wp-rss2.php or something like that.

It's a long shot, but you never know.

well I downloaded the latest wpmu.zip, extracted

    wp-rss.php
    wp-rss2.php
    wp-feed.php
    wp-commentsrss2.php
    wp-atom.php
    wp-includes/rss.php
    wp-includes/feed.php
I opened each one and made sure there were no extra lines or spaces at the end then uploaded them in ASCII.

Still have the same error and still have what appears to be a blank line inserted to start the feed.

    Any other ideas? Please?

    1) you shouldn't have to do anything to set a default feed, other than have posts like drmike said.

    2) look at the files *on the server*. See if there are any blank lines there.

I have an ftp program that likes to add blank lines to files. :-/

Oddly enough, in Bloglines both feeds show fine.

The feeds are there, just not valid xml.

What files should I check on the server specifically? The same ones I listed above or are there others that could be the culprit?

    Thanks for the help.

I honestly have no idea. I doubt it's something specifically buggy in MU though, or a bunch of us would have the same issue.

Bloglines and Google both accept and display them as valid feeds.

I guess I just go through file by file looking for extra spaces.

If anyone thinks of another idea, please let me know.

I have the same problem. It seems that there is a blank line at the top of all files in WPMU. I don't know what its the cause. Did anybody know who can I eliminate that lines?

    i´m having the same error!

All of a sudden, on a WPMU 1.25a install, the feeds stopped working. I say "all of a sudden" because they were working and i didn´t changed anything related to feed files.

Not even WPMU Sitewide feed (plugin) is working. Same for regular rss2/atom feeds for any of the blogs under my MU install.

any ideas on how to debug/fix this?

By not working, what exactly do you mean? Not updating? Can you view anything on the feed pages themselves?

There is a cache of feeds stored in the db, so find those and delete and see if that helps. They are in the options tables, and they will be marked as rss_tonsofnonsense. Sometimes that helps.

andrea_r, debugging a little bit i figured out it was a blank space at the beginning added by a plugin.
