Why does the wp-admin directory have its own favicon.ico, and where is it being called from? I've tried both find(1) and grep(1) to locate it, but I can't for the life of me find where this icon is being called from.

It's pulling the standard one out of root for me.

Me too, because when I changed it, it shows the new one site-wide.

Okay, I swear I'm not going crazy (I think).

I've just checked on my XP machine in IE 7 and Firefox 2.0, and it's behaving normally (like you guys are seeing yours). I checked on my iBook in Safari and Firefox (which hadn't been to the site before I uploaded the icon yesterday) and again, the behavior is correct.

HOWEVER, on my other Mac (my primary desktop), AND on my Linux laptop, it's behaving as I described, in Safari, Firefox, and Konqueror on both platforms. I must be having some strange cacheing issues :(
