My wpmu site is now working with 972 bloggers, but when I got to add the 973rd, wordpress tells me there was an error creating the user.

Is this because of limits on my end or within wpmu? Is there anyway around this? I've been reading through the forums and found a little bit about a limit to the number of blogs in a db, but no one mentions users.

I really want to hit 1000 bloggers, any advice?

It's not an MU limit. Ask Farms, Quenting, Donncha, etc. All well over 1000 users.

WP.com is up to what 660,000?

Farms and Quenting are up to ~30,000 each. Give or take.

quenting, do you have a VPS with someone or are you running your own box or what?

Part of my problem is there's only so much you can do on shared hosting. :(

Dig around a bit, he's got "a few" boxes.

Big boxes with lots of cpu power and plenty of RAM.
