You can find the answer for blogs.dir by searching. As for Multiple databases, it's still pretty much a role your own thing at the moment.

multiple synchronized MU installs behind a reverse proxy is the easiest i've found. Solves both blogs.dir and multiple db problems.

We've had a lot of stuff come up (a move in a couple months, major surgery this week), so my short answer is whenever we get around to it, we WILL share. I promise. :) (cuz I write the docs, proof, test and upload, see?)
He's worked it out in his head, and started testing locally, but most of the ground work was started by quenting there.
